The Hobbyist: Making a bike and carriage...

Having a hobby can be very therapeutic and costly. But being a very practical person, I try to use as much recycled materials as I can to make things. So here is how I made the bike and carriage.

I went down to the dump. In Hawaii they have re-use centers there where people donate things and the center sells them for cheap. Kind of like a goodwill store.I found an old busted up wheelchair for $5.

Then I took and old bike my friend had rusting away in his storage and sanded it down and painted it, lubed and adjusted the cables and put air in the tires,

Then I took the wheelchair and removed the seat and other non-essentials, leaving just the lower frame, where I used some leftover wood I had to make the base for the cart. I also designed the linkage to conect the carriage to the the bike using left over square metal tubing and then painted the wheels for the cart,

Then I added some side panels from some leftover wood, just to keep everything secure in the cart when the bikes moving and some minor paint touch ups with some leftover paint we had used on the deck.

To test the bike and carriage out, we took it for a ride to see the lava flowing into the sea in Kalapan on the Big Island.

It was a wonderful day, and the bike and carriage did very well. Later I put smaller bicycle tires on the the carriage so it handles better on and off pavement.
