Hello great ladies and gentlemen, it’s another week and a great one to continue our lessons on West African Pidgin, like I said before last week that this week’s lesson will contain some videos so that we can hear how some of these words are pronounced, that is really interesting and I can assure you that our lesson today is going to be very interesting.

But before we continue, let’s review some of the things we learned in our previous lesson. So, last week we talked about some words in west African Pidgin, words like wetin. I also reveal that when using the word are in standard English which in west African pidgin is translated as dey, there are things you need to consider. you don’t need to use the word dey in all the places you see are in Standard English depending on the contest.
So, what is our new lesson today?

NEW LESSON
So, today we want to continue with more phrases and meaning and we would watch the video attached in other to learn how it is pronounced. So to begin with, we are going to consider a few words/phrases and their meaning and then we would consider a few examples.
So, let’s look at some words like :

  • Bros

  • Show

  • Oyibo

  • Na so

  • Sha

  • Tear rubber

  • Mumu

Those are very important words in the west African Pidgin. And here is their meaning.

BROS means a male friend or boy. It is also a word used to greet a man or boy. But you know, Africa cherishes respect a lot and there are some words you don’t use with an older person, if not it will turn to insult. For instance, you do not great an old man bro, that would be so disrespectful.

Let’s consider two examples of where to use that word:

Example:
  • Standard English: Hello dude, how are you doing?
West African Pidgin: Hello bros, how far nah?

  • Standard English: Brother, you did a great job, well-done.
West African Pidgin: Bros, you too much, well-done.

SHOW: The word show simply means Come or arrive. Unlike in standard English which means to have people or somebody see something Or display something.

Example:
  • Standard English: I have arrived.
West African Pidgin: I don show.
  • Standard English: She is here.
West African Pidgin: She don Show.

OYIBO is a word used to describe someone of European, American, Asian descent. The White skin colored people are referred to as Oyibo. It’s actually a beautiful name.

Example:
  • Standard English: That Whiteman is from the United States Of America
West African Pidgin:De oyibo man, nah from yankee.

  • Standard English:The Europeans are much in my country.
West African Pidgin:Oyibo dem plenty for my country.

NASO, is a word that means that’s true. So, if you want to say that’s true in pidgin, you say Naso. It is also used to express support, for instance, if someone says or does something that you are in agreement with, you can say Naso with a thumbs up to prove that you have greed or side what he/she is saying or doing.

Example:
  • Standard English: He is a good person, that’s true.
West African Pidgin: Him nah better person, Na so.

Can you try using those highlighted words above to form sentences in West African Pidgin? I will like to see your examples in the comment section.

WORKSHOP TIME

Standard English:
The Europeans are much in my Country and I will like to teach them a lot about my culture, I will also like to learn from them.

West African Pidgin:

CONCLUSION

As our interest to bring more investors in other to maintain this ecosystem increases, it would be wise to study and learn different strategy in which we can use to attract more users to join this moving forward platform and one of such ways is the power of language.

West African Pidgin is one widely spoken language in Africa, it will interest you to know that most of the meet-ups done by steemians in Africa are done using West African Pidgin. Even when Steemians engaged in the promotion, most times they use West African Pidgin with potential newbies. The reason is that is a widely, simple, and catchy means of communication here. Please stay tuned for my lesson 3 by next week.
