The software, in broad terms, has a set of instructions (usually referred to as code), it is positioned between you and the hardware of the device, enabling you to use it.

But what is computer software, really? In terrestrial terms it is a hidden component of a computer system that makes it possible to interact with the physical components of your computer. The software allows you to interact with smartphones, tablets, game boxes, media players, and similar devices.

It is important to note that there is a significant difference between hardware and software. Software is an incredible resource. You can't hold it in your hands. Hardware consists of suitable resources such as mice, keyboards, USB ports, CPUs, memory, printers, etc. The phones are hardware. iPads, Kindles, and Fire TV are stick hardware. Hardware and software work together to enable the system.

While all software is software, your day-to-day use of software is likely in two ways: one is system software and the other is application.

The Windows operating system is an example of system software and is pre-installed on Windows computers. It allows you to interact with the physical computer system. Without this software you will not be able to start your computer, go to Windows and access the desktop. All smart devices have system software, comprise iPhones and Android devices. Again, this type of software is what drives the device, and enables you to use it.

Application software is another type, and is more about the user than the system. Application software is what you use to work, available media, or play games. It is often installed on top of operating systems by computer manufacturers and may include music players, office suites, and photo editing apps. Users can also install synchronized third-party software. Some examples of application software include Microword, Adobe Reader, Google Chrome, Netflix, and Spotify. There is also virus software, at least for computer systems. And finally, apps are software. Windows 8 and 10 uphold apps, as do all smartphones and tablets.

The definition of software is that a person sits at a computer and writes computer code for it.
