Unfortunately🤦‍♂️, while others have exceptionally good memories, others have very poor memories. Those with poor memories are those who are unable to remember information stored in the long-term memory. This is what is generally know as forgetting. - @tignoga

The big question has always been; Why do people forget?

Information that is stored in the long-term memory needs to stay active, without which it will fade away or decay as time passes. When this happens, memory traces in the brain are weakened and the traces disappear over time. For this to be avoided, the information or memory taces need to constantly be rehearsed so as to strengthen the traces and avoid deterioration and consequent decay. For example, most people have found themselves forgetting the telephone numbers, adresses and even names of persons they've broken up with from a relationship after a long time. This is simply because of non use or non rehearsal of those memory traces or information. Therefore, forgetting is not only dependent on the passage of time but also on non use of stored material. Old information becomes less important and can even impaire the ability to retain new information.

Equally important to note is that, some active processes can interfere with learnt material stored in the long-term memory. Let's take for example; After 5 years of memorizing your spouses telephone number, something happens and he/she suddenly changes the number. When you want to place a call, the former number (pre-stored memory trace) will always come to mind and it will take a very long time for the new number to be learnt.

Furthermore, the reverse can happen where learning a new information makes you forget previously learnt and stored information. Imaging traveling abroad, being acquainted with the new currency after sometime makes you forget how to interact with the former currency you were so accustomed to before traveling. Another example could be acquiring a new accent abroad and not being able to talk or articulate in the way you use to before traveling.

Sometimes people also forget intentionally. This could be due to the fact that the information is either a painful one or a useless one not needed to be stored. Would you like to keep in memory an information like; Bamenda is the capital of America? I'm not sure you would want to waste a second pondering over that, let alone storing it. No, you wouldn't because it simply isn't true and it's useless information.

This other situation is very common as well, that of trying to recall information that you never stored. This is very embarrassing. Do you remember having met someone and done all the introductory formalities, and there after a few moments the person calls you by name and you can't even make out the first letter of their name again🤦‍♂️? That's exactly what lack of attention and failure to encode information does, it can land you into serious trouble😅.

CONCLUSION

Conclusively and to round up with this series dear Steemians, we need to understanding that our body especially our brain 🧠 is a very complex system. We have the duty to train it for it to give us the output that we deserve. There's nothing you would expect from your brain that you didn't put in there, it will only respond to your intentionality. This goes to students who want to succeed in their exams needing to learn, store and retrieve when needed, this goes to professionals in all walks of life managing useful information necessary for the survival and relevance of their activities, this goes to parents having to deal with birth dates, anniversaires, family events etc., and you can name it. You only reap what you sowed.

Thank you for journeying with me from the first sequel till now. I hope to meet you soonest as I bring you more engaging and educative post. Let's keep the steam on and have a blessed day ahead.
