Choosing a Farm Site

Greetings dear steemians . Happy Sunday to us all. Hope everyone is carrying on well. Most Cameroonian farmers who engage in the dry season farming or second season farming, are already targeting the various areas where they are going to plant their off season crops. They are preparing the seeds or seedlings and other farm inputs that would be needed to get the area ready for planting. As for those who engage in second season planting of maize and beans, most o f them have already planted the maize while preparing the area for the planting of beans from the 15th of August. That is what normally obtains especially in the grassfield area of the North West Region of Cameroon. Identifying the area where the crops are to be grown is always very important. Any crop cannot be grown on any soil especially during the dry season farming. There are some crops that may not survive in areas that are prone to a lot of aridity. For this reason most crop producers would plants the crops earlier so that they do not suffer an early dry season or they chose wisely depending on what was planted in the farm previously or what grows well in the said area.

Identifying the farm site for off season farming

Identifying the area where one is going to plant the off season crops entails a lot. It is not only the availability of land that matters but it is important to know how fertile the land is as well, as the PH(Potential Hydrogen) level of the soil that is ; the level of acidity or alkalinity of the soil. The kind of grass that grows in a particular area also matters, because for instance a crop like wheat may not do well in an area where the wild creeping carpet grass is common because they look very similar. The kind of grass that grows in a particular farm would determine the fertility of the area oh how well another crop may do well in that area. After this land survey exercise, land preparation is always next.
