It’s another beautiful day and I hope we all doing good. Today I will like to share with you guys a little part of my work .Many person do not knw their blood type and it not really good new to know people don’t care to know. Will be telling you the small I know or have understood.
First I cannot be talking of blood type with out talking of blood itself

what is blood?

Blood is a colored guild in the body which is red and is made up of 2 main parts liquid and solid
The liquid components are water, salts and protein and
The solid component are the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets .
Blood function in transporting nutrients and oxygen to require cells and waste product away from cells.
In human we have 4 main type of blood group or types which are;
Blood type

Blood type or groups

This is grouping of blood in human base on the presence or absence of antigens or antibodies on the surface of red blood cells. The 4 main groups I mentioned above each can either be rhesus positive or negative adding another 4 group making it 8

Blood typeRhesus factor
APositive
ANegative
BPositive
BNegative
OPositive
ONegative

There are many systems used to determine blood group but today I will talk on the ABO blood group system, which is the most common system been used.
Since each group is unique if a wrong group is transfused to a person it can let to serious health issues even death

Group A has A antigens on the surface of red cells with A antibodies in the plasma

Group B has B antigens and B antibodies

Group AB has A and B antigens but no antibodies

Group O those not have antigens on the surface of red cells
So the O group can be used on anyone with the other types of blood group because of it not having any antigens .

The ABO system is alps do side by side with the Rhesus system.
The red blood cells can sometimes have this rhesus protein (antigens) to which maybor may not be presence on all the blood groups making it 8 groups as seen on the table above .
For example if someone is sick and need blood transfusions, if the patient is;

A he or she can receive either blood with blood group A or O depending if the patient is negative or positive.
Same with B can receive either B or O
AB can receive from all but can give to anyone
O which is known as the universal donor but can receive blood only from another O blood group person.

Test for blood group

This method of testing is base on the agglutination formed between anti-Rh-serum and antigens and antibodies from red cells.
The test is a simple procedure but the reagent (anti-Rh-serum) is costly so it advice to go see a medical personnel for you test

Requirements

  • syringe for blood collection
  • sterile swap to clean the skin surface
  • test tube (EDTA)
  • tourniquet
  • anti-Rh-serum(Regent)

  • blood group slide
  • mixer

Procedure

Blood is collected ,placed in a test tube. 4 drops is place on the testing slide each anti Rh serum is added each label with the anti serum placed , it is then mixed to have a uniform solution using a spreader , place the slide on a mixer for some time then you observe for agglutination.
When I talk of agglutination I mean clumpiest of the solution .

If you see agglutination in the spot where you place anti Rh serum A and also in the spot of AB the blood group is A
For B agglutination is seen in B and AB spots
For AB agglutination is in A, B, and AB
For O since O those not have antigens , agglutination on the spot where anti Rh serum D is drop is considered as the Rhesus factor.
So agglutination at the anti D spot determine if your blood type is Rhesus negative or positive and also determine if your blood is O group.
So for example if agglutination is seen on all 4 spot indicate that the blood type is AB Rhesus positive.

This test is very important not only for blood transfusion also in pregnancy if a Rhesus negative women married a Rhesus positive man possible for the child to be Rhesus positive is high so the mother needs to be place on a drug (RhoGAM).
This drug help so that the mother’s body don’t form antibodies against the body.
So it’s good to need use blood group.
Thanks for read.

Wow. This is an entire lesson. Sounds like I was listening to one of my coursemates doing a perfect exposé. Thanks for sharing this. Many need to know about blood grouping and how it functions. Especially those planning to have kids or people who are most likely to have transfusions.

I can see that Dr Yana did a good job in teaching you that stuff in level 2. It's here i see that despite the language barrier you learnt a lot😂😂😂
You're doing well, this is a great post

Thanks bro
He really did well pouring that knowledge on me😂😂😂😂

A lot of knowledge, please when it comed to blood group O, is there no rhesus factor attached to it?
Bc i know theres O positive and O negative, and O negative is the universal donor?
Please clearify me if am wrong.
Thanks alot for the write up

Thanks such much for reading
Yes with the O group there is the Rhesus factor
Since the O group lack the antigens on it’s surface the anti Rh serum D which is used for Rhesus is also use to determine the O group which makes it Rhesus positive or negative in case of agglutination or not respectively

The O group as a whole is the universal group both positive and negative the only advantage with O negative is that it can be used as a first line of emergency without screening.
Thanks again for reading you question just made me wanna write more

Thanks so much for sharing this.
Was great reading through.
QUESTION
What's the role of rhesus factor??

Thanks for reading
Sorry I didn’t made it clear in my read up
The Rhesus factor which are proteins is use for compatibility test In pregnancy , transfusion or donation
When I talk of compatibility I mean is the blood ok to be transfuse to a patient without hemolytic transfusion reaction
Same with a pregnant mother and her child if she is negative and her baby is positive if not detected to place her under the anti D antibody drug so that the mother child have no complications
