World Rivers Day is held on the fourth Sunday of September every year. There is no fixed date for World Rivers Day; it is celebrated on the date that falls on a Sunday in the fourth week of September; for example, this year in 2024, the Sunday of the fourth week of September is the 22nd, so the World Rivers Day is celebrated on 22nd September. World Rivers Day originated in 1980 when Canadian environmentalist Marc Angelo urged people to take care of rivers, which was later celebrated as World Rivers Day.
Rivers are inextricably linked with our lives. Natural formation of rivers on land. River water is important for the survival of biodiversity. Rivers play a unique role in our crops, as many crops cannot be grown without river water. It also has beneficial effects on transportation, power generation, flood control, etc. So the above mascot is very important in our life.
Initiatives like World Rivers Day play an important role in increasing people's awareness of rivers and aquatic ecosystems. Increased awareness of water pollution, river encroachment, and river degradation. By observing World Rivers Day, people are aware of the ecological importance of rivers and water bodies. Social initiatives have increased with educational institutions, local communities and various institutions participating in cleanliness drives, tree plantations and awareness programmes. People accept rivers as not only a natural resource but an integral part of their lives. This creates a sense of moral and social responsibility to conserve and restore river water locally. By observing World Rivers Day, local governments and policymakers focus on enacting and implementing new laws to conserve water resources. Therefore, it can be said that as a result of River Day, people have become aware of river conservation.
Active promoters of World Rivers Day are usually environmentalists, conservationists, and various organizations working to protect water resources and preserve rivers. Some of them and some organizations are particularly notable: Marc Angelo who is the founder and main promoter of River Day, the United Nations, various river conservation organizations, local communities and NGOs, educational institutions and environmentalists.
Some new and creative initiatives can be added to make World River Day more impactful in our communities, such as Local river guardian programs being launched, river heritage and history being preserved and passed on to the next generation, and a river clean-up campaign. Activities include taking technological help in river conservation, organizing festivals or programs that are compatible with rivers, giving incentives for river conservation, expanding environmental education programs, etc.
I invited them @mostofajaman, @me-tarzan, @sahmie.
