SEC-S13W6 – Let's talk about things that could improve the world

Greetings to you friend of this community and platform. It's another week for the steemit engagement challenge and at the center of it we are looking at things that could improve the world.

There are so many things in the world that needs improvement. Unfortunately many of us have turned a deaf ear and blind eyes to these things. When we look at them our lives are greatly affected by these things as they are negative to our existence. In the course of this contest I will dwell on improvement on agricultural practices. Before I continue I will like to invite @virajgerath, @mesola and @okere-blessing to join the contest.

Have you ever asked yourself what you want to change and how to achieve it?

Looking at our world today we would see that we need to so many things and agricultural malpractices is amongst. About 70% of the world's population is engaged in agricultural activities in large or small scale. Many of these farmers have turned to carryout activities which endangers the environment. These activities include;

• Wrong use of chemicals in the farm. Many farmers do not respect manufacturers instructions on dosage and methods of application hence overdose the chemical which leads to toxicity in the farm. This remains as residue which can be consumed by human leading to disease. Also in case of rain it is been carried by rain water into water bodies hence poisoning aquatic life.

• Poor disposal of containers of chemical causing environmental pollution which is harmful to man, animals and other living things

• Poor farming techniques making the soil vulnerable to erosion forces. Many people burn the soil before cultivating hence making the soil lose its fertility overtime

• Increase in climate change due to deforestation activities. With the vast growing population and mouths to feed farmers cut down trees or burn down forest areas to create farm land. This activities is dangerous to the environment as it leads to the depletion of the ozon later by chlorofluorocarbons.

These practices and many more by farmers pricks my mind each time and it calls me to assist in leading the change to ensure a better world. When we look at these activities we see they have a negative impact on the environment and without a healthy environment living things will die.

Who do these possible changes depend on?

This change for me depends on every living human being as we are involved in it directly or indirectly with our activities. If we have to have a better tomorrow we all need to be involved in leading the change. We can't allow it just on the farmers alone to do it as we are all benefactors of the environment.

Do you have the tools to achieve it and take action?

I don't have tools to endure this but as a professional in the agricultural field I can impact change in so many ways.

• Awareness campaign
There are many farmers who are ignorant of the impact of their activities to the environment so it is our place for us who understand to create that awareness forum to educate them on the effects of their activities with the environment in order to enhance change. Some of my activities on awareness are as seen in the pictures below

• Education on organic farming techniques
Being an agricultural engineer I understand and know what it means for the environment to be polluted with chemicals and other stuff so I signed for organic farming and less use of chemicals. This method has been very effective for me and I have been helping farmers understand this phenomenon and use it. This method is good as there will be little dependence on chemicals even to treat plant diseases hence enabling a safe environment for everyone, reduced chemical residues in food stuffs and better health for everyone. I have conducted researches to treat plant diseases without the use of pesticides and it has proven to be effective alongside increased crop yield. If farmers engaged in this then we are safe

• Government action with agricultural policy
The government of each country should put in place policies government all agricultural activities. This will help curb down the malpractices and negligence by farmers and other individuals. This will help foster change in our societies.

• Government policy on deforestation.

For sure many things we use today are made from forest materials but it is necessary for the government to put in place policies governing it's activities. Not only putting in place but also ensuring it is done with strict and proper follow. The government should also create new areas for replanting of trees to replace others used. This will help enhance climate change action and a healthy environment.

Do you think others would imitate these actions for a collective achievement?

We all want to live longer and to do that we need a healthy environment so for me I think is necessary for everyone to emulate this example. Just close your eyes and imagine yourself in an with foul odour, definitely you won't be able to breath. Or imagine the ozone layer completely destroyed and the outcome of its action on the earth, everything will be in ashes. Also imagine eating food with a lot of chemical residues, that's cancer we're bringing to our system

We can't be in a society where people decide to ge indifferent about what's happening. No we need to emulate these examples so as to reduce the many health problems were facing today. So many of us don't why where and how we get some illnesses but is as a result of some of these activities.

CONCLUSION

Finally, it is very necessary for us all to join hands in the improving our world through good agricultural activities. If we look at it we will realise that it costs us nothing to take a positive action for it. Just try it and see it's outcome. You will definitely love.
