Meghna is one of the main rivers of Bangladesh.

Meghna River is one of the major rivers of Bangladesh and one of the largest and deepest rivers in the country. It has a great impact on the geography, environment, economy and culture of Bangladesh.The Meghna River is originally a major tributary of the confluence of the Brahmaputra, the Ganges and the Surma-Kushiara, which flows southwards and empties into the Bay of Bengal. The beauty, vastness of this river and the towns located on its banks have become a part of Bangladesh's heritage and lifestyle.Thousands of ships are floating on the chest of this river which are engaged in livelihood of human life. The Meghna River originates from the hilly areas of Assam and Tripura states. Flowing from India, it enters the northeastern region of Bangladesh and joins the Surma and Kushiara rivers to form a giant. It joins the old Brahmaputra near Brahmanbaria district.Later it joins Padma river to form a huge river near Chandpur, which is known as “Meghna”. We have known this river as Meghna River since childhood, we have read Meghna River in books as a child.Among the three major rivers in Bangladesh, Padma Meghna and Yamuna are the largest rivers in Bangladesh. The special feature of Meghna river is its strong current and depth.

During the monsoons, the river becomes extremely torrential and can cause flash floods.The livelihood of the people living on its banks is largely dependent on the river. Thousands of families in Bangladesh live by hunting in the middle of this river. Not only fishing, but also shipping and agriculture are the main livelihoods of the people of this region.Meghna river is especially important as one of the main habitats of Hilsa fish. A large portion of Bangladesh's tastiest hilsa is sourced from here.

Meghna river is one of the main means of transport system of Bangladesh. Which you can understand by looking at the cargo ships below. Moreover, various industrial factories have been built along this river. Which is located right on the river bank. Meghna Group's Fresh Industrial is located next to it.It ensures sea connectivity between different regions of the country and is an ideal route for cargo and passenger shipping. The role of this river is immense in maintaining connection with various important cities of the country including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal.Abundant fodder is produced in the region along these rivers, which plays an important role in agriculture. Paddy, jute, vegetables and other crops are cultivated in these pastures. However, many families are constantly losing their homes and being displaced due to river erosion.

This river is inextricably linked with the history and culture of Bangladesh. Many writers, poets and musicians have created their works around this river. A vivid example of the riverine lifestyle and culture is the folk songs, festivals and river-centric trade of the people along the banks of the Meghna.Biodiversity of Meghna River is also very rich. Various species of fish, crocodiles, dolphins and water birds can be seen here. However, due to pollution, overfishing, some species are under threat. To maintain the normal flow of Meghna and to adopt sustainable management to conserve its biodiversity is very important.

All in all, the Meghna River is not only a part of the geography of Bangladesh, but an integral part of the country's economy, transportation, livelihood, culture and biodiversity.
