Work on the Redevelopment of Mendi Airport in Southern Highlands Province is progressing well thanks to the support of the PNG Government and Asian Development Bank Partnership.

Work on the Redevelopment of Mendi Airport in Southern Highlands Province is progressing well thanks to the support of the PNG Government and Asian Development Bank Partnership.

The project is valued at over K40 million and includes;

1. Construction of the New Terminal Building which is expected to commence in April 2021.
2. Strengthening of the existing runway pavement to cater for Q400 and ATR aircraft series or of similar type.
3. Other associated works include the NAC staff house, tractor shed, Engineer’s site office and power house.

Despite proposals for an extension of the Mendi Airport runway, preliminary aeronautical studies conducted by NAC on site, indicates that the extension is impossible due to proximity of mountainous terrain surrounding the airport and urban infrastructural developments which are very close to the aerodrome vicinity.

This Project is contracted to Sinohydro Corporation Ltd and is anticipated to be completed by October 2021.
