BOOK OF HOURS
Here, before me,
I, a sinner, confess
To being as I am.
I confess to the good and the evil
That steer the helm of the ship
In this drift I find myself.
I confess
To being possessed
Of the theological virtues,
Which are three,
And of the mortal sins,
Which are seven,
Though the earth often repeats
That they are more.
I confess
To being the master of my hours.
The one of blind and wrathful stabs,
And the one of lucid and gentle tendernesses.
And to being, in any way,
Wanderings
Of the same whole.
I confess to being mire
And moonlight on mire, mixed together.
To being the string of the bow
That shoots arrows above
And below my height.
I confess to being all
That might be born in me,
To having roots in the soil
Of this my condition.
I confess to being Abel and Cain.
I confess to being Man.
To being a fallen angel
From that heaven governed by God;
To being a monster arisen
From the deepest hole in the cavern.
I confess to being myself,
I, just as I came
To declare that I am myself
Here, before me!
