Embarking on the Historic Road of 52 Tunnels: A Tradition of Adventure and Reflection
Hello fellow travelers! We're approaching the beginning of a new week, with new posts to share, and once again, a new contest has begun! As is somewhat of a tradition for me every year, I enjoy taking the "Via delle 52 gallerie," or the Road of 52 Tunnels, a military road built during World War I in the Pasubio area of Vicenza province. So, this place has become a destination for hikers from all over Italy, a beautiful route of almost 7 km that passes through 52 tunnels. As I always say, it's not a hike for everyone; you need to be quite prepared. As you can see from the photos I've shared, there are points that are very exposed. It's a beautiful walk where you get to see stunning surrounding landscapes, but you have to be very careful. Many people have been injured here, and unfortunately, some have even lost their lives. Moreover, hiking in the mountains requires a certain level of physical fitness, and this trail is not suitable for everyone. Sadly, I've encountered people wearing inadequate footwear. Also, mountain weather changes rapidly, so it's essential to be equipped in case of rain. Fortunately, this time, I had good weather, and I managed to ascend and descend within 6 hours. It was quite a challenge, especially since I haven't been training much lately. Nevertheless, it's always beautiful to hike this trail, albeit emotionally intense. I always do it with respect because, unfortunately, many people have lost their lives in this place. See you in my next post, and I wish you all a great start to the week!
This weekend has been quite peaceful for me, but I decided to go on a mountain hike, something I've been planning for a few weeks now but had to postpone due to bad weather, which seems relentless in Italy this year.
Unfortunately, the early 20th century saw the horrors of war in Italy, and this area was on the front lines. In a very short span of time, this road was constructed—imagine, just 10 months—without modern technology, only using explosives and manpower.
I definitely recommend this trail if you love mountains and mountain hikes, but please make sure to prepare yourselves adequately beforehand.
Hello traveler! 👋🏼 @hotspotitaly, your Historic Road of 52 Tunnels reminded me of the rail track from Kalka to Shimla which I have visited several times. The place looks classic and worth a visit.
