Good day to all electronics students and instructors.
Today in the Electronics Academy, I will be designing a rectifier circuit. Rectifiers are circuits that convert alternating current to direct current using a combination of Four diodes.

Working principals
At the positive phase of the wave, D1 and D2 at forward biased, letting power flow while D3 and D4 are not working.
But when the power is going through the negative phase, that makes D3 and D4 forward biased and conducting and at that time D1 and D2 are resting.

Assignment

Task 1:

Build a full wave rectifier circuit like the one we have above, outline the steps you took to build. Measure and indicate the DC output.

Circuit Diagram for rectifier

This circuit will guide me through the process, indicating where to connect every component and their proper position.

Step One

Connecting the diodes as it is connected in the circuit diagram.

Step Two

Connecting a capacitor to the output of the rectifier

Step Three

I connected the input of the rectifier to a 9 volt battery

Measure and indicate the DC output.

I set the function on the meter to Direct Current and started testing the rectifier's output voltage.

The DC output from the rectifier is 7.4 volts

Assignment

Task 2:

Discuss 5 additional applications of the rectifier circuit, apart from the ones we previously mentioned.

Motor control
rectifier adjust the DC output voltage so that it regulates the speed of a motor.

Noise filtration and reduction
Rectifier use capacitors to filter out signal that will cause noise in a circuit.

As a pulse Generator
A rectifier produces an output that is made up of plenty small ripples. The pulse like nature of the rectifier's output is a good pulse generator.

Arc Welding
AC power is converted to DC power and used in the Acc welding devices so that the DC voltage will strike and maintain the Arc, regulating the welding speed and quality.

Electroplating
To finish a metal with another precious metal, you need a DC current supplied by a rectifier to move and attach the material to it's target.

Assignment

Task 3:

What were your observations while building the full wave rectifier circuit, and what precautions did you take?

Observations

  • I tested the diodes to identify the positive and negative sides.
  • When I mistakenly switch the position of the test probes, the meter attempted to read backwards.
  • when I swapped the position of the battery, the rectifier did not complain, the reading was normal.

Precautions

  • I made sure I don't connect the diodes the wrong way.
  • I did not connect the battery for too long so that it will not run down.
  • I made sure I don't switch the test probes when testing direct current
  • I made sure I don't switch the connection of the capacitor.
  • The voltage indicated on the capacitor must be higher than the voltage supply by the rectifier.

Using the rectifier I designed

I am testing the rectifier's output as it brightly powers a 4 in 1 LED bulb. And output 7.4V

Conclusion:

Thank you for assisting my learning in electronics. I will love to use my rectifier to try electroplating any material. I am happy that I could build a rectifier and make it light a Light Emitting Diode.
