Passion Driven

In my secondary school days,we usually have just three weeks holiday which wasn't enough to learn any new skill but I've always wanted to learn a skill and I looked forward to the opportunity to actualize my dreams.
After my Junior West African Examination (WAEC) in my Junior Secondary Three,we were given a four month holiday I was so excited and I decided to use it as an opportunity to actualize my dreams. I couldn't just sit at home doing nothing so I decided to tell my parents my goals so they could guide me on how to achieve it. My parents gave me their full support which was a stepping stone for my success to acquire a fashion designing skill.

I was quite young, I was anticipating my thirteenth birthday the next month, so my mom was scared to let me go anywhere so she took me to her best fashion designer and handed me over for the acquisition, I was welcomed with open arms. I started the acquisition on a Monday, my boss was so good at what she does and she had a total number of ten apprentices, I was the eleventh and the youngest of them all.

My first day had to be a memorable one because after prayers in the shop we started setting up, everybody admired how small I was, I did a brief introduction and everyone wanted to know why fashion designing?. I just explained my love for pretty dresses and the urge to make one.

My training officially started the second day and the first thing to learn was how to paddle a machine.
A machine is paddled anti- clock wise and if done otherwise could break the needle or stitch backward. I tried it a couple of times but it wasn't perfect but my passion kept me going. I kept pressing on till I got better.

The second step after paddling the machine was to sew a straight line . I guess this was the most stressful aspect of it, I never really got perfect in this aspect but I couldn't just give up. As time went on I only got better, the encouragement really went a long way to strengthen me and that was part of what kept me going and I never stopped.

Next week, I started learning measurements and simple cutting, I started from a straight skirt and Pencil gown. I guess this had to be the easiest step for me after my boss showed me how to cut the dress I went home and practiced till it became a part of me. I even taught my senior sister so I could know if I got really better. I measured my sister and showed her how to cut. I measured myself and sewed a perfect skirt and gown. This aspect made me believe I could really make it in the world of fashion. As time went on I only got better and started making dresses for myself. I always wore it to church and showed my friends how much I've achieved in a few months.

Days ran into weeks and weeks into months I was already exploring other aspects of fashion. Anytime I get bored at the fashion house I'll go learn how to weave a dress because the shop also has a weaving machine. I also got perfect in weaving. I really achieved a lot in these four months and I felt so fulfilled.

Finally, the resumption date was announced and I had to return to school, I sewed new pairs of uniforms for myself and my siblings. It was like a dream come true, I had mixed feelings though because I would miss the fashion house, but my education was very important. I couldn't wait for our usual three week holiday to come sew myself a new dress. As I got to school my Friends admired my uniform because I sewed it a bit differently from the school's pattern and it was unique, I was so proud to say I made the dress myself.

Fast forward to today I am an undergraduate in the university, I'm combining my fashion with education as I sew for fellow students as a side hustle and I'm still hoping to go back and perfect my skills and dive into the males fashion world hoping I'll do better too.

I really wish I had pictorial representation but this is like six years ago and I was without a phone.

Never give up on your little dreams and let your passion be your driving force , It will only get better as the day goes by.
