Mejorando el diseño de casitas para conejo | Improving the design of rabbit houses

En casa criamos conejos por tradición, mas o menos desde 1995. Si bien hubo temporadas donde no tuvimos ningún conejo, esto solo duró unos meses debido a que de alguna manera llegaban los conejos a casa.

Los conejos lo criamos para autoconsumo. Debido a que están muy bien nutridos, su carne es blanca y muy suave (incluso un primo lo confundió con pollo), además aporta colágeno y te llena... Ahora, hablémos de sus casitas.

At home we have been keeping rabbits by tradition, more or less since 1995. Although there were seasons when we did not have any rabbits, this only lasted a few months because somehow the rabbits came home.

We raise the rabbits for our own consumption. Because they are very well nourished, their meat is white and very soft (one cousin even mistook it for chicken), it provides collagen and fills you up... Now let's talk about their houses.

Diseño #1

Este fue el diseño clásico para las casas de los conejos. Se utilizó madera por ser un material aislante del frío y calor. La malla metálica que se observa tiene un marco de madera haciéndolo removible, esto con el objetivo de moverlo al momento de alimentarlos.

This was the classic design for rabbit houses. Wood was used as an insulating material against cold and heat. The metal mesh that can be seen has a wooden frame making it removable, in order to move it when feeding the rabbits.

Gazapos o crías de conejos sobre su gazapera

Este diseño tiene dos desventajas:
-Las crías solo deben habitar el 1° piso, porque si están en el 2° piso hay un gran riesgo de caerse y morir, ya sea por el golpe o por el frío.
-Si se trata de limpieza, los guanos del 2° piso caen sobre los conejos del 1° piso, haciendo que estos últimos tengan menos espacio para saltar, comer o dormir.

This design has two disadvantages:
-The hatchlings should only inhabit the 1st floor, because if they are on the 2nd floor there is a great risk of falling out and dying, either from the shock or from the cold.
-If cleaning is involved, the guano on the 2nd floor falls on the rabbits on the 1st floor, giving the rabbits less space to hop, eat or sleep.

Diseño #2

Leonidas tomando sol

Este diseño y fue mi idea, jaja. Al ser conejos tienen dientes fuertes y mordían la madera, por eso reutilicé ladrillos (usados para los techos de las casas) como muros y el piso es el mismo. La malla también es removible para darle su comida y la limpieza. Cierto, para la limpieza colocaba dos cartones de huevos en una esquina y los conejos iban allí y realizaban su guano y también orinaban. Una vez lleno, lo cambiaba por otros cartones nuevos. Entre el piso y el cartón colocaba cáscara de huevo molida a manera de cal para que nuetralice el olor y la humedad, y así aleje a las moscas.

This design was my idea, haha. Being rabbits they have strong teeth and bite wood, so I reused bricks (used for the roofs of houses) as walls and the floor is the same. The mesh is also removable for feeding and cleaning. Right, for cleaning I put two egg cartons in one corner and the rabbits would go there and make their guano and also urinate. Once it was full, I would replace it with new cartons. Between the floor and the carton I would put ground eggshell as lime to neutralise the smell and the humidity, and so keep the flies away.

Diseño #3

Macho alfa (Mapache) y hembra reproductora (Francisca)

Este es el diseño mejorado del anterior. Para esto se colocó una base ligeramente elevada. Como los conejos se acostumbraron a que su baño sea en una esquina, allí se colocó una reja metálica (malla) con un repitiente abajo. Sobre el recipiente está una malla de tela el cual separa los guanos del orines. ¿Alguna vez criaste conejos?.

This is the improved design of the previous one. For this purpose a slightly elevated base was placed. As the rabbits are used to bathing in a corner, a metal grid (mesh) was placed there, with a repeater underneath. Above the container is a mesh screen which separates the guano from the urine. So far this design is going well, but there is room for improvement. Have you ever raised rabbits?
