My Cassava Harvest Journey: From Planting to Maintenance to Harvest

Hello friends from home and abroad warm regards to everyone, I'm Anthony from Nigeria and it's a pleasure to have you on my post, which I will be talking about; "My Cassava Harvest Journey: From Planting to Maintenance to Harvest"

Planting Cassava: The Beginning of the Journey

I started my cassava journey by selecting healthy, disease-free cuttings from mature cassava plants. The ideal time for planting is at the beginning of the rainy season, ensuring that the soil is moist and conducive to growth. I prepared the land by clearing weeds and debris, then tilled the soil to improve aeration and drainage. I planted the cuttings at a diagonal angle, burying them about 4-6 inches deep, ensuring they were spaced adequately to allow for growth.

Maintaining the Cassava Farm: Nurturing Growth

As my cassava plants began to sprout, I focused on proper maintenance to ensure a healthy harvest. Regular weeding was crucial to prevent competition for nutrients and water.
Like compost, to enrich the soil, promoting robust root development. During dry spells, I made sure to water the plants adequately, especially in the first few months after planting.

Monitoring for pests and diseases was another essential task; I used natural remedies to control any infestations, keeping my plants healthy and thriving.

The Harvest: Reaping the Rewards

After about 10-12 months of diligent and consistently caring, it was finally time to harvest my cassava. I knew the roots were ready when the leaves started to yellow, signaling that they had matured. Using a spade, I carefully dug around the base of each plant to loosen the soil and gently pulled the roots from the ground. The satisfaction of seeing those plump, healthy cassava roots was incredible!

Post-Harvest Care: Ensuring Quality

Once harvested, I cleaned the roots to remove any soil and prepared them to be processed into garri. I learned that cassava spoils quickly, so I either processed them into garri or akpu right away. I stored any remaining roots in a cool, dry place to extend their shelf life.

After the harvest next is to peel off the cassava skin, after peeling you wash and load it inside a big bag that can hold the quantity of the cassava and then carry it to the engine and ground it, which we press with the presser overnight then the next day which the water has come out and next steps is the.

Filtration and Frying

We filter before frying; the hotter the fire, the faster the frying would be. I would be showing vivid pictures of all that I have talked about that would give a clear understanding.

This journey from planting to harvest taught me the importance of patience and care in farming. Cassava is not just a crop; it’s a rewarding experience that brings about a sense of accomplishment and connection to the land.
It is always vice versa; you reap what you sow; consistently working on my farm made my harvest the best.

I have come to the end of this interesting blog thanks for stopping by my post!!!
