Folic acid and vitamin B folate
Health benefits of folic acid
- Folic acid helps our body to produce and maintain new cells in our body system.
- Folic acid helps to prevent cancer because it maintains our DNA the way it is.
- It helps maintain our red blood cells volume
- Can be used by people suffering from low blood volume.
- It prevent birth abnormalities such as neural tube defect in newborns.
Are you planning to get pregnant, already pregnant or you are up to the childbearing age? Then you need to take about 400 mcg of folic acid routinely because it shields the baby from serious birth defects like Anencephaly and Spina bifida.
Although there is no known cause for these defects. Sometimes it may be as a result of some changes in the structure of the chromosomes/genes or possibly the combination of genes.
Folic acid supplementation before and during early pregnancy can help prevent neural tube defects such as anencephaly and Spina bifida
Anencephaly:
is a serious birth defect in which a baby is born missing parts of his or her brain and skull.
Spina bifida:
occurs right below the spine. In this condition the spine partially develops, leaving some opening or protruding when the baby is still growing in the womb.
These birth defects can be prevented if women endeavour to take folic acid once daily before and during pregnancy. We all desire to have healthy and bouncing babies. Therefore we should always take our routine drugs and also eat foods that are rich in folate.
Foods rich in folate include:
- Green vegetables
- Legumes
- Broccoli
- Eggs and lots more
Warning:
Consult your doctor before taking folic acid supplements as some may be allergic to this drug.
Endeavour Follow your doctor's instructions.

Very interesting! I think Folic acid or Vitamin B is the one vitamin people on average knows the least about. I learned a lot from your posting.
Thanks so much for this wonderful post
Have always thought folic acid is only meant for pregnant women alone
Thanks for the eye opening ma'am
Well done dear sister, for educating us more on folic acid i appreciate .
Folic acid is very good for the developing fetus. During my anti- natal visit when I was pregnant. We were told that it's compulsory to take folic acid the first three months of pregnancy.
Thanks for this write up!
I was on family method after my second son and as I went to the hospital to remove it to be able to get pregnant, the midwife asked me if I wanted to be pregnant that same Month and I accepted and she placed me on folic acid tablet. I didn't know it would be effective but i got pregnant that Same month and stopped taking the folic acid but when I got to register for ante natal, the nurse said I shouldn't have stopped consuming it but rather it's really good to start consuming anytime you discover you're pregnant. That's why they emphasize we register for ante natal even during the firstone month into our pregnancy.
I know this drug is very important to every human being. Even growing children. Thanks for sharing.
