My childhood memories
Living our childhood is special and such a wonderful time of our lives. Being young you don’t always know how special. It is only when you get older that you realize how special it was.
Childhood memories are a reminder of the times when life was so much easier and simpler. Times when all you wanted was to have fun, to discover the unknown and to be free. This I realized when I was invited to participate in this contest. It brought back so many pleasant memories from my childhood as a child.

These are the memories who formed me into who I am today. It has affected my life forever. Now, as I am getting older it is these memories I pray that will not become remote and vague.
Studies has shown that most people’s earliest childhood memories evolve around family and that is the same with mine. My memories today took me back to the best times I had with my family. Not just my immediate family but my BIG family.
My grandpa, my mother’s dad, had a farm. Between my mom and her four other siblings we were 18 nephews and nieces. Today I can understand why grandma always threatened to chase us with her broom when we were playing in the farm house. 18 Grandchildren will drive me insane!
So yes, we were one loud and happy family!
We all got together once a month on the farm celebrating birthdays, Christmas and other special days. Our mother’s always went that extra mile to make your birthdays special.
Birthday celebrations
It was also a time to milk cows, driving tractors, swimming in the old farm dam, playing hide and seek between the mealies (maize plants) and chasing the sheep.
The days were special but what I can remember most to all is us children sitting next to the coal stove while grandpa was telling us stories. I was always praying for the others to fall asleep so that I can have more of grandma’s ginger biscuits.
Oh no I forgot! Those weddings! Yes, so much like those “Big fat Greek weddings” my get to see on cable networks.
The wedding services usual took place in our church in town but the celebrations happened on the farm until the early morning hours.
They were the highlight for us girls. Time to dress up and time to believe that we are princesses and one day our prince is coming to fetch us.

Do we deserve to hold onto these memories? For sure!

How I wish I could have shared those days with my children.
Unfortunately the city lights was winking for us. That was were jobs were and grandpa passed away.

I am glad your son likes the outdoors. It is one of the reasons why we moved to the coast, so that our son can get away from his Xbox and enjoy the outside world.

Those childhood memories are always very special, I like hat part of listening to stories form grandparents. My grandma was always keen to tell us more and more of those old stories.
