Assalamualaikum

Everyone. Here is another interesting topic for all of you. Let's have a look.

Hello Steemit People's!

Talking about mental health used to be a subject marked by prejudices and secrets that aroused a sense of discomfort and embarrassment. Today, I see that great strides have been made in raising awareness of the issue. In addition, the pandemic has helped us to understand the relevance of mental health in our lives. Although there is still much work to be done, we now face another challenge: How and what do I do to have mental health?

Let's start with the basics, according to the Mayo Clinic, mental health is the overall well-being of the way we think, regulate our feelings and behave. For the World Health Organization, WHO, mental health is a state of well-being in which a person expresses his or her capabilities and is able to cope with the normal stresses of life, to work productively and to contribute to his or her community.
Mental, neurological and substance use disorders account for 10% of mortality and 30% of non-fatal illnesses. Depression is, worldwide, the most important cause of disability. (Pan American Health Organization figures 2021).

I love definitions and figures, but this always leaves us with the questions: how, what do I do, when, how much?

First things first, mental health is a result, not a process. To understand this better, I invite you to think about oral health. We all know that the health of our teeth and gums is relevant. But more importantly, we all know the "oral hygiene practices" we need to do on a daily basis: brushing our teeth, flossing and using mouthwash, and visiting the dentist regularly.

I invite you to reflect on "mental hygiene practices." A basic kit of three simple, free, daily practices. To begin, I recommend creating a safe space, a place and a time that can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as you need.

. The main purpose of our emotions is to be felt. Repressing emotions causes them to build up and make us sick. . . Becoming familiar with what we are feeling and where in our body we feel it, allows us to release that internal pressure and avoid emotional dullness. This also allows us to lose fear of our emotions.
. Not everything we think is true. Not everything that goes through our head is "our" thoughts. Observing our mental dialogue as if we were listening to a radio, allows us to find a space of mental clarity and choose which thoughts work for us and which ones we should let go of.
. Identify the people with whom we feel genuinely connected and feel free to be authentic. Recognizing this and making time for those relationships gives us a dose of connection that does wonders for our mental healt.
