SITUATION I PASSED THROUGH

In my life, I’ve found myself in many unpleasant situations, but this one I am to write about always makes me laugh anytime I remember about it.

This happened when I gained admission into the University for Development Studies, Navrongo campus which was in September,2018 to study computer science. I got lost on my very first day on campus.

Let me give you the details of how this happened.
3rd September,2018 was the day the University asked all its fresh students to report and register their courses or risk loosing their admissions.

I reported to campus on the said day but was not fully prepared, my father dropped me off and asked me to get all the necessary registrations done so we go back to tamale the same day, so that I make the necessary arrangements and report to school.

My father had dropped me off on campus and went to a nearby village which is Fumbisi; it’s a 2 hour drive from Navrongo.

I had already paid for an off campus hostel, of whoss location I didn’t know. However I wasn’t bothered because I was to return home the same day, so no need locating my place of residence on campus since I wouldn’t be passing the night.

Little did I know things wouldn’t work out as planned.

I successfully went through all the necessary registration process by 3:00pm and waited patiently for my father to come and pick me up. I didn’t call him since I thought I would be bothering him.

Hours passed by I still didn’t hear from him, I was now growing impatient. There and then, my phone rang and it was a call from my father. He told me to go my hostel and pass the night since he would be able to make it as he had a car breakdown.

I was devastated, it was 6:30pm in the night and didn’t know anywhere since I was a stranger.

I called my cousin who was a continuing student to ask for directions to my hostel. Because I was a stranger, the places she was mentioning and the directions she was giving all didn’t make sense.

She then asked me to give it to someone closer so she could talk to that fellow. I gave the phone to one woman who she spoke to, after they had ended the call, the woman asked me to keep walking straight whiles her son brings out her bicycle to lead me to my hostel. The name of the hostel was Dome Abra.

I started walking slowly into the dark and it began to drizzle, I continued walking and the intensity of the rain started increasing, I also doubled my steps but the boy who was to lead me wasn’t just coming.

I new I was now on my own. I saw a light bulb deep in the dark and I thought that was my hostel so I proceeded further. When I reached the bulb, the place was a grinding mill which was situated at the end of the community.

I could see a thick forest ahead and could hear the sounds of frogs and insects. I knew I was now lost. I stood drenched in the rain without knowing what to do.

THE PROCESS I TOOK TO OVERCOME THE SITUATION

I knew I had reached a dead end so I started retracing the path I followed, it was still drizzling and I was feeling very cold.

I walked for about 5 minutes and I saw an L-Shaped unplastered house. I enter the compound and no one was there; they were all indoors due to the rain.

I randomly knocked on a door and a man came out. I greeted him and told him I was going to Dome Abra hostel. He told me he doesn’t know of any hostel with that name and asked me if we new anyplace closer to that hostel.

** Luckily for me, my cousin had ever told me that my hostel was close to a poultry farm**, so I told the man it was closer to a poultry farm. He put on his raincoat and led me straight to my hostel.

It was just a stone throw from where he stayed. I thanked him a lot and prayed for him.
I entered the hostel, went to the caretaker and took a key to my room. I was very happy at last. I said my prayers and went to sleep. I was very tired and exhausted that day.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion this bittersweet experience taught me a lot. I learnt to always know my place of residence first when I arrive in a certain location i am not familiar of.

I have also learnt to ask people for directions if I’m not familiar with a place as there is an adage in my local language dagbani which says “The one who asks for directions never gets lost”.

This has been a very exciting contest by @juzkid. Looking forward to seeing more of this. I really appreciate your hardwork.

I invite @sadiqxylo and @chenty to partake in this contest.

Thank you all for your time.

Conclusion: Thanks so much for writing and participating in this great contest, I really enjoyed your story and how you came about solving that, that was an amazing and terrifying day for you. I think I also faced similar issue during my first week when I reported to school but luckily on my side I kept moving around until I was able to locate our hostel. Good luck in this contest, great entry. Keep sharing. Thank you

Being stranded without knowing where to go at a new environment is very scary. Great entry buddy.

I don’t pray for someone I know to get into that type of situation. It wasn’t easy that day
