Good morning steemians. I trust that we are all doing well. Today I will like to share with you how to ensure Electrical Safety in the house and at workplace.

Safety

Your workplace or household may have safety procedures for reporting any concerns about occupational health and safety. Your workplace may also already have procedures to follow to ensure that, safety precautions are adhered to when working in a potentially hazardous environment, such as when working with electrical equipment and machinery.

Safety working conditions require having good tools, machines and a well-designed workplace as well as having orderly working conditions. The conditions will also very much depend on the co-operation of everyone in the workplace. To work in safe environment which is free of hazard, the workplace must be clean and tidy. Thee Electrical worker must consider his or her own and other people safety in their work habits

Unsafe conditions in the work environment include

  • Slippery floors
  • Bad lighting
  • Untidy or dusty workplace
  • Defective hand tools
  • Unguarded machinery
  • Poorly stacked materials

Ways to avoid electrical hazard

1 . The use of two pin power plug cable is common at work place and home. At times we use a small object to push the power socket cover away before plugging the under-standard power plug. This practice must stop

2 . Do not use any power tool which has damaged casing, brush caps, switch, lead or plug or which is overheating or smell burnt.

3 . Do not overload power tools or connect them to a power supply of incorrect voltage

4 . Tag or Label faulty equipment , noting the fault and inform the supervisor

5 . Equipment which are inappropriately maintained should not be touched because it can lead to electrical burns

Circuit protection

Electrical circuits are designed to work with specific maximum values of current. The circuit can be used for loads using lesser current values than the designed value but must be protected against higher values. For example a 20 amp circuit would be wired with conductors capable of carrying 20 amps continuously. It is not designed to carry currents of more than 20 amps.

Protection devices for electrical circuits are generally classified into three groups

1 . Circuit Breaker

The operating principle is one of actual switching off the power to the faulty circuit. This can be done by either heat or the magnetic field generated by the flowing current. The intention is to protect the circuit and any equipment connected to the source.

2 . Fuses
The operating principle is one of fusing where the fuse element melts with heat generated by too much current flow. The intent is to protect the circuit and any equipment connected to the source.

3 . Residual current device

The operating principle is to disconnect the power from the circuit when an unbalance in current occurs. Its purpose is to protect the operator of the circuit rather than the circuit and any connected equipment.

Conclusion

Electricity is very dangerous and it can cause serious damage to our body which may consequently lead to death. Let's ensure all the safety practices and avoid the use of inappropriate electrical tools especially the faulty ones. The use of two pin plug should also be stopped. Electrical Safety cannot be comprised.

Thank you

My regards

Thank you friend.

Thanks for the education on electrical safety. I caused a shortcircuiting some days back but the fuse came to my rescue. We both know what would have happened in its absence

short circuit and overloads are the very reason why we should protect our homes with various protection devices. With Residual current devices (RCD), the operator is prevented from electric shocks with operating current of 30mA
