The Screen Addict Recommends – Big Night (1996)
There’s something oddly satisfying about watching a show or film about food being prepared and / or eaten. Recently, I got sucked into an algorithm rabbit-hole of cooking shows on Netflix, which in turn stirred up a craving for food-themed films.
There are many options to choose from in this sub-genre – Lasse Hallström’s () or Jon Favreau’s (), for example – but I’ve always been particularly fond of Stanley Tucci’s lovely directorial debut .
Small-scaled and unassuming, nevertheless steals your heart and whets your appetite. The film almost feels like a stage play with its straightforward but faultless script, the cozy 1950s setting, and a small but wonderful cast that includes Tony Shalhoub, Minnie Driver, Ian Holm, Isabella Rossellini and of course Tucci himself.
A copy of unfortunately is very hard to come by – I had to import my DVD from Korea, of all places – but I promise you that tracking one down will be very much worth your while.
Seek it out & get your fix.
