🕹️ Gaming Nostalgia: Advanced Soccer Simulator on ZX Spectrum 48k

In this post, I return to one of my favourite computer games from my childhood that 35 years later, I can't stop playing.

After sharing some thoughts on Space Invasion yesterday, part of @frafiomatale's comment triggered something in me.

My first computer was a ZX Spectrum

For whatever reason, I decided to look up one of my favourite games on the Spectrum, a game that I remember as Soccer Simulator which led me to the world of Spectrum website and the game's full title Advanced Soccer Simulator. After a bit more searching, I found a website where I could play it online.

The emotion I felt at that moment was something that I have never experienced before. It was nostalgia, joy, sadness and much more. I could feel it navigating its way through my veins in such a bizarre sensation that I don't know what it's called. Even now, I struggle to put it into words.

😀 Happy Memories

As a child, I remember taking it in turns with my brother to manager our teams. I was Celtic, he was Morton. It was the greatest football match up in the history of football gaming. Even now, I remember my star man, simply known as Lappen bagging goal after goal for my side.

And just like my 9 year old self, I was hooked again. The graphics and gameplay are definitely basic. Each player only has 2 stats and I'll let Crash Magazine describe the presentation:

presentation is superb and the obligatory goalmouth highlights are great - even if they are in monochrome

If not great, the players movingly randomly and the ball bouncing around like a pinball machines is as entertaining as it is frustrating.

2 seasons were over before I knew it and then the problem with playing retro games online - I pressed the wrong button. My game, gone.

I started again, but I needed to find a better way of playing.

So today, I've installed a Spectrum Emulator and can now save my progress.

♥ I Still Love It

In a moment of madness, the developer who created the game picked English and Scottish football teams at random, forgetting to include the Mighty Royals (Reading FC of course). Luckily, changing team names is possible so I removed Clyde and added Reading.

I was quickly back in the game, remembering everything from my childhood to be successful and as if by fate, my first save after getting the emulator provided me with a familiar name up front...

image.png

... Lappen. A player whose skill could drop to 1 and I will never sell him.

The game's so old, there's no Premier League and to many people's surprise, football did exist back then.

You start in Division 4 and after 16 games, I'm pushing for promotion.

image.png

Play-offs didn't exist in 1989 so it's Top 3 or failure.

The temptation for me is to explain every screen and every option (like selecting the pitch colour - choose from 1-7 with no knowledge as to what colour each number corresponds to) but there will be few outside my brain who will have any interest in that.

When I finish typing this, I'll be returning to this game which will be permanently open on my Desktop and forgive me if in a few days time, I write a post describing every detail on every screen. My brain is telling me that I need to write a thorough guide for future fans of the game.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, particularly about the emotion I've tried to describe. As an adult, have you felt a strange combination of emotions, or new emotion that you've never felt before? Could something as innocuous as a video game evoke that emotion within you?

You’ve got yourself a deal.

🤝

Perfect ! :-)

Wow! I also have a special love and special feeling for the ZX Spectrum 48k.
Then I was 17, my brother was a little younger and we got this computer...
Years later, I sold it. Later he regretted it. It was a computer that I used to play and learn to program. And I bought a similar one according to the ad for $ 100, but still did not check how it should be connected to the TV (
That's what I played more in ELITE and LODE RUNNER
I will definitely write about ZX soon
I bought two processors Z80 from AliExpress for $ 1
Modern computers can do a lot - but the ZX could do more))

I think I regret selling every non-PC I’ve ever owned!

Spectrum was my first experience of programming too. I didn’t understand any of it (copied from magazines) but it ‘s probably little surprise that it became my career.

Ilnegro said that he learnt to code on the Spectrum too so it’s shaped a lot of lives!

Was Elite “Frontier Elite”? A space game?

I’ll need to look up Lode Runner, I don’t recognise the name.

I have some 386/486/Pentium... and are waiting for me and for my posts))

it was simply called ELITE, I looked for it on the PC, but it was not the same. They made elite-dangerous on Kickstarter - but I haven't tried it, although nostalgia hurts

I first played with Runner at school, on a school PC, and only then was I very surprised to see it on ZX Lode Runner

GIF: The emulator of my school PC. The school's screen was 512x256, and Sinclair's was 256x192. But I had a school computer once a week for two years, and a ZX for more than 5 years and every day (because it was mine)

That game is so frustrating! I can't even beat Level 1!

Greetings, my friend gorilla! I hope that yoy feel like this month of February started on the right foot with this rediscovery of your childhood :)

I'd love to hear your thoughts, particularly about the emotion I've tried to describe. As an adult, have you felt a strange combination of emotions, or new emotion that you've never felt before? Could something as innocuous as a video game evoke that emotion within you?

I am currently 27 years old, and maybe age is an important variable on this questions, but maybe it is not. In my humble opinion of a person experiencing this weird thing that it is to be alive, I think these memories invoke a special kind of nostalgic feeling, that in Portuguese we call saudades. Sorry to link to another post, but I've found that it is not that simple to translate some cultural enriched terms from one language to another, and I also noticed that I used the repetition of Maybe on the post and it made me smile:

[...] there are a lot of translations for Saudades, and at the same time there is no exact one. And maybe they can be possible and impossible at the same time, and maybe they can be neither. Maybe.

To not extend too much this digression, I think it is a truly human experience for an action that triggers specials memories to evoke so unique and concrete emotions in us, maybe even 35 years later, as you said it was your case. The fact that these dear memories have also the presence of other important people in your life, like playing against your brother, may color these emotions in a unique way to each individual experiencing it; and that's probably the most I can verbalize about it right now... hahaha

Cheers bro, today my dear Corinthians facea off against our biggest rival Palmeiras in their stadium, be sure to send your support and energy, whatever that may aid in reality. Take care, cheers!

Saudades looks like it's an appropriate word to describe the mixture of emotions. Happiness, sadness, longing,.... a combination of lots of words for what that time was and hoe life from there could have been so different.

today my dear Corinthians facea off against our biggest rival Palmeiras in their stadium,

It looks like your boys were a bit lucky with that result!

I wasn't even born when this came out 😂, and I thought I started with old games but this is on another level. To think how far the games went from this to the current FIFA/FC/PES series.

I started with a Celeron from intel in 2001-2002.

I tried the emulator you linked and found a list with multiple old games, now I am going to check some 😃, maybe I'll find something I played before.

To think that FIFA almost certainly existed before you! They’ve really milked that cow!

I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll enjoy. It might just be because there’s a feeling in my core that these games give me but I probably spend more time playing these games than modern ones.

Although I’ve just started Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PS4 for the first time and that’s sucked me in!

As a fan of box sets, have you watched Continuum?

I have installed the first RDR and planning to start it once I add some mods to it and RDR2 after that. You can do a review of RDR 2 once done, it will probably take you some time, the game has over 100 hours of content, but it will be fun.

I am not sure if I watched Continuum from start to finish, I've seen plenty of episodes when AXN used to play the series, this aired when I was in high school and I was wasting nights watching so many series that I can't remember all of them. I had The walking dead, Arrow, Flash, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, Falling Skies, I was going through whole seasons in a weekend.

At my current rate of play, I'll be writing my review in about 6 years time! Especially if I keep getting distracted by old skool games.

I saw my brother at the weekend and he reminded me of another Spectrum game that we used to play - Howzat. So I'll have to look that up next!

I don't think I have ever played this game, but it reminds me a lot of another similar football game, "Match Day", on which I spent several afternoons as a kid, although that was perhaps for C64 or Amiga.
I'm looking for the first game I played in my life on the ZX Spectrum, but I can't find it, maybe you can help me: I don't remember the title, but it was about a long yellow snake (at least that's how I seem to remember it) that had to avoid obstacles. Its movement was accompanied by an irritating music 😄.

Irritating music is a given for that era!

I’ve searched for yellow snake on the spectrum but nothing stands out to me. Try a Google Image search for Spectrum games and see what leaps out at you!

I’ll look up Match Day - the name doesn’t ring a bell but I played a lot of football games over the years!
