Portrait of a stranger

Heeeey to all @steemit cowboys. Today I want to show you this portrait that I made, to practice shadows and lights with my old-fashioned gouache :)

I had been looking for many photographs to use for reference but in particular I wanted a black and white one with enough contrast to take a long time. The play of light is important and knowing it and then putting it into practice with some independent drawing is fundamental.

The main reason I always paint with Gouaches is simple; I have no other materials with which to experiment and these have been the ones that have been within my reach, however with them I have been able to do much more than I expected, and that really makes me very happy, it inspires me a lot. Even the progress I have had, and sharing it here, including the processes and some of my vague recommendations, has also been very important to document it and remind me of how much progress I have made. Thank you @Steemit, Happy 5 years anniversary <3 :)

I don't just want to come here and post, withdraw my reward and now, without leaving anything, or just leaving things empty. All I post here is a demonstration of how much progress I have made.

This portrait had as reference this photograph its author is Ynes Borgwardt. Visit him, his work is very interesting and elegant.

I always mention that I like to start with the face. In this case, the face has many segments of very strong light and shadow, specifically on the part of the nose, which makes it so prominent.

Painting my hair took a long time, I did not know what way to give it with the spots and lines, and yet I was able to do it by differentiating the grays and the lights.

The jacket took me some time but due to the dimension of its size, I had to use a large light gray cape and then start shading it, and make the black outlines, the pocket and the folds.

To finish, I only needed this sleeve, which had a lot of contrast, I think it is the part with more shadows and lights. I started by painting the darkest areas and then little by making the grays lighter, and leaving a small white space.

That is great portrait, specially working with paints that makes the colours, shades to look different rather when the work is done with pencils. You definitely progressed since your started posting :)
