The Importance Of The First Step
Something that must be accomplished has to begin with a first step. As a matter of fact, there is no way you can get to where you are going to without moving from where you are. It is by taking the first step, then complement it with other steps that you will arrive at your destination. Just like my mentor would say "you have to make a move to make an advancement." That is, for everything that you want to achieve, there is usually the first step that must be taken. This is why I believe that, among the steps you need to achieve success, the first step is usually the very fundamental and basic, which you must have to take.
In this part of the world for example, if you want to become a Barrister, you will first take the UTME entrance exam, then gain admission into the University to pursue a carrier in law. After which, you will go for the mandatory Law School upon graduation. All these are part of what will qualify you to be called to Bar and become a Barrister. However, the first step is to gain admission to study law. Without the first step of seeking for admission, all these other steps will not occur. The subsequent steps are only extensions of the first step and they are possible because a step has initially been taken.
No builder who intends to build a house starts from the roofing, they have to start from the foundation. When the foundation is laid, then each block that is placed on it will lead him to completing the house until he gets to the roofing level. If he had not taken the first step of laying the foundation, then the building will only remain a dream. A lot of people have brilliant dreams of what to achieve and some mind-blowing ideas, but what they need to understand is that the ideas will not fulfill themselves - you need to initiate it by taking a step towards actualizing them.
When the first man on moon, Neil Armstrong, finally stepped on moon after long years of planning and waiting, he recognized the power of the first step and he made a comment that "this small step will pave the way for a bigger stride." In this era, we have seen massive advancements in the astro field and the explorations of humankind in space. In fact, at this point, there are many space stations and some even manned, which orbit the space. Something that started as a small step has grown in ways that cannot even be imagined. This shows the power that is embedded in the first step.
However, a lot of people are scared of the first step even though it is a very strategic, significant, and pivotal step to success. The truth is that people normally have reservations about doing what they have not done before. While some others are simply scared of the outcome of the step, or of failure, or of what people will say. All these fears are what limit advancements and keep one on the same spot. You will be surprised to know that it may be the same step that you are heavily scared of that will become the breakthrough step that you have long been waiting for.
When you have a step to take or something to do, do not allow fear to hold you back or to delay your actions. You need to know that without taking risks, you will be limited in life and your success might just be a mirage. In physics, we were taught that for a body to be set in motion, some forces have to be overcome, like inertia. But when these forces are overcome, the body will begin to move. In the same way, the first step is the one that us heavily resisted and opposed by fear, by uncertainties, by many other factors, but when you brave the first step, you will see how the other steps will be made easy.
You also need to understand that when you want to perform and action, then you have to do it in a timely manner. The whole time in the universe will not wait for you to take action, you need to take advantage of the time that you have to take the actions that you need. There may not be any guarantee that the step that you are about to take will deliver the desired result, but if you do not take it, then you do not stand any chance of getting any result at all. More so, the step may not be easier tomorrow than it is today, so take that long-desired step and do it timely.
