Dumbo - Ran Art Blog

My latest drawing is Disney's Dumbo the Flying Elephant.

A student of mine wanted to draw Dumbo, but more realistically, so we went for it. This is my version.

I used markers and colored pencils.

The markers I used are Ohuhu Honolulu, which I highly recommend. I have the 320 marker set, which comes in a bag (there is also a 260 marker set, which I had and gave to my daughter).

They come with color charts, which I recommend filling, for the ease of finding the right color with the right brightness value and the right saturation.

They have one brush nib (for filling areas and mixing colors) and one chisel nib (for accuracy and straight lines).

Usually, I use Copic markers.
They are my favorite and of the highest quality, though they are very expensive.

I do mix marker brands.
In the next example, I used both Copic markers (alcohol-based) and Zig markers (water-based).

With alcohol-based markers, you can draw on regular (though thick) drawing paper, but it is better on mixed-media or marker paper.

Water-based markers are not suitable for drawing paper; they will ruin it.
It is best to use them on mixed-media paper, watercolor paper, or paper designed for markers.
