Canalscape in Castlefield, Manchester - a little photo story

in WORLD OF XPILAR2 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone. Every now and then I see some stunning photos on here, taken in cities and towns, so I thought I should post some myself. Yesterday I finally managed to spend time taking pics at one of the prettiest locations in the city, which is amongst Britain's most cosmopolitan cities. The city is Manchester, and the location in it is called Castlefield - a former urban conservation area, where, it is thought, Manchester began more than 2000 years ago, when military forces from ancient Rome built a fort at a place where two rivers: Medlock and Irwell, join.
But what marked the real before and after for Manchester was the first canal in England, which was built in the 18th Century. That was the time when Industrial Revolution in Western world began. Manchester's status during those times is the very reason why Castlefield two centuries later became Britain's first Urban Heritage Park.
You can read more about the history and development of Castlefield area on Manchester City Council's website here. The map of the area can be found here.

Here's a photo which, I think, shows quite expressly the somewhat surprising view of different centuries coexisting, and even supplementing each other:

The building on the left, at the front was built towards the end of 19th Century. This coexistence of centuries is the characteristic feature of the area. The following photos capture some of the views that can be enjoyed in Castlefield, where there are a number of waterways: canals and rivers, available to owners of boats.

End of the Photo Journey

I hope you enjoyed these photos. I used just an old mobile phone with 5.0 megapixel camera, which gives me 2500px wide photos with 72dpi. F 2.4, ISO 125. The photos had been post-processed using GIMP.

You can read about another of my journeys in Manchester from the last year here.

Hope you are having a great day.
