Today I Was An Environmentalist

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 years ago (edited)

Who are we for the planet? Maybe we are a virus, because everything we touch, we destroy.

I once mentioned that in the past, my city was mining potash ore. Ore was mined in an open pit, ie in a quarry. The plant was later closed and the quarry abandoned.

Over the years, the quarry has accumulated a lot of water, which has dissolved the salt that was there. Now we have a huge salt lake there. Salt water is constantly trying to find a way to leave the quarry and get into rivers, groundwater and fields. Accordingly, local authorities have something to do, they occasionally fill the dams of the quarry and spend a lot of money on it.

I chose the profession of chemical engineer, which is very strange for normal people. When I was in school, I knew chemistry really well, and I liked it. Unlike me, all my classmates hated chemistry.

Now I work in a large chemical plant, you could say in a corporation, because there are many plants here. At first I worked at a chlorine plant. Most people are horrified by the word chlorine, but working at this plant was great. I still miss these times.

Subsequently, I received several promotions, and several factories came under my responsibility. This means that I need to pretend that I know the technology of production of different substances and understand different chemical reactions. Of course, this amount of information cannot be covered even in a few years. Therefore, when there is a meeting on topics unfamiliar to me, I try to remain silent and nod approvingly.

It turned out to be a good strategy and so I look very wise. So now I am acting head of the technical department, and all the corporation's plants are in my area of responsibility. Now I need to be more silent and shake my head more approvingly.

We were recently approached by a professor at an institute. He wanted to do some research on our quarry. Although I've only been to an quarry once, the management has appointed me a connoisseur of it. I was ordered to take a delegation there.

I used Google Maps to make me look like I saw this quarry and know how to get there.

After preparing, I decided to meet with the professor and his team.

I met a man who was probably over 1,000 years old, but he was moving well. It was clear from his conversation that he knew much more about our quarry and the processes that took place there than I did. So I immediately started to shake my head approvingly.

The professor was not alone, he had a whole team with some devices. I took them all to the quarry.

There I was struck by the feeling that a human leaves behind. We destroy nature. We know so little that we do not know how to properly use the resources that the environment gives us.

See how much land is lost in vain:

It is hard to believe that a few kilometers away are the picturesque Carpathian Mountains, forests, rivers and lakes.

The professor's team set out to unpack. suddenly I saw an inflatable boat. It turns out that they intended to swim somewhere on the lake.

Cherry spent half an hour training, one of the team boarded the boat, picked up some things, and sailed away.

It turned out that he took samples for water analysis. Other members of the team took some measurements, watched the banks collapse and took soil samples.

All in all, I had a great day outdoors. It is good that the winter is without snow and severe frosts.

In order not to tire you with a long description of events, I will immediately tell you about the results of research.

It turned out that the upper layers of water became fresh, to a depth of 1.5 m. In these upper layers, even fish live. Apparently fish caviar was introduced by wild ducks or other waterfowl.

Fortunately, no harmful substances were detected. This even made it possible to make a small plan to turn the quarry into a recreation area.

In the end, all these conclusions were brought to the top management of my corporation. But unfortunately at the meeting they had glassy eyes, they listened and did not hear, and the professor was not put out the door just out of respect for his age.

After the professor and his team left the negotiating room, my management openly laughed at him. It was said that the old man had lost his mind and lived in fantasies.

In fact, the only one who was smart in this room was this old man.

The topic of quarries and mines extracting so many precious goods to make the components of our modern world is something that over the past years has been more and more evident and I keep feeling this deep sinking dread in my gut every time I read about it or think about it. It feels like such a complex problem to tackle. You are very lucky that this particular quarry didn´t test toxic, but so many do.
I think that with your knowledge of chemistry you could also contribute to a better understanding and a better exploitation, although I guess the problem is always the political and economical interests.
I have no idea what age you might be but if you are post-Chernobyl disaster, I´d think Chemistry would be a very popular career one would want to be an expert in. I remember I was about 10 years old when I heard about that. It was one of the most serious things I had heard about in the world. I became a Ecologist Activist in my school. A group of us wanted to warn the rest on the dangers of nuclear energy, burning of the rainforest, dealing better with waste, etc.. but when I was about 17 I became quite skeptic on how much difference I could make and thought the world is mad. Anyway, you touched on a subject I could talk for a long time.
I would like to nominate this post for @wox-bestpick

I used to think that it was ecologists who saved our world. Then I realized that this is done by people who improve technology and invent new technological processes. Until 2007, we had a plant for the production of chlorine, which caused chlorine leaks, gassiness of the surrounding area, people at the plant were suffering from occupational diseases. People who lived in the surrounding villages could not grow cucumbers and cherries. In 2007 we closed this plant, built a new one using new technologies and in 2010 launched it. I worked at this plant for 10 years. There is no smell of chlorine, no emissions into the atmosphere and almost no other waste.

The environment can also be saved by politicians who can adopt appropriate legislation.

The environment can be saved by economists who can create the conditions for clean technologies to be more cost-effective.

I have no idea what age you might be

I will be 37 years old this year. When the Chernobyl disaster happened, I was less than 1 year old. April 26, everyone in my country knows this date, the date of the Chernobyl reactor explosion. By the way, this happened because of complete human stupidity. If you haven't seen the 5-episode series Chernobyl from British HBO, I highly recommend watching it.

but when I was about 17 I became quite skeptic on how much difference I could make and thought the world is mad

As a kid, I used to be proud of blocking water when I brushed my teeth. I was glad that I rode to the village by bicycle (we simply did not have a car then). I thought I was saving the world. In those days, our country had a very difficult post-Soviet period with hyperinflation and closure of enterprises.

Fifteen years later, prices for goods and energy resources in my country have reached European levels. Then the amount of water consumed by my city halved, and as fuel prices rose, people began to buy economical cars.

What has affected water savings? Environmentalists, people's consciousness? Only money.

You are right, Money is the key factor that moves all of this. Ecological approaches have to be good for the economy to work. Unfortunately there is no other way.
Technology can be used for good and it´s wonderful when that happens.
I have seen the 5 episode series of Chernobyl. I thought it was very good and interesting. Yes, it was all caused by a human error, this can happen again, with other human errors. It´s a very powerful tool to be working with...maybe robots will outdo is humans and be better at managing. They might be more perfect than us. I don´t know.

I am very happy that the water is clean. BTW 1000 years old man :)

I confirm that he looked as if he lived in the Middle Ages :)

hello @o1eh I am an environmental engineer and worked for a treatment company for a while. That's why I read your article with excitement. Unfortunately, the most important thing I learned during this time I worked is the endless desire of human beings to destroy. Our company was designing and producing purification companies for its customers. All of the customers were planning to establish a treatment plant, as they had to comply with the law. And they all kept talking about these treatment plants being just an inconvenience. However, there was no problem in using nature's blessings without limit. the only problem was in making up for what they got from nature. I don't know, maybe I would feel the same if I were in their place. It's easier to talk from here. However, it is clear that it is not a species that harms nature as much as we do.

As for your situation, glad your water is in good condition. But the sad thing is that people who know the business are not appreciated, on the contrary, they are thought to be "stupid".

Hi! I am also familiar with this situation. My corporation also has a water treatment plant. It perfectly cleans sewage from all contaminants. The only problem is the ingress of salt into the water. If the water contains salt (chlorides), we cannot clean it. To do this, you need to install a desalination plant. This is a relatively small investment. Talks about this installation have been going on since 2000, for 22 years no one has allocated funds for its purchase.

22 years is such a short time indeed!

Thanks for the informative article! I know that we have so many talented people with deep knowledge in Ukraine. But, unfortunately, many are not in demand. You have an excellent profession. And it's great that they found application in our country. Sometimes the environment is in trouble. In Yuzhny, near Odessa, there is a chemical plant. Sometimes such a smell spreads that you think a chemical disaster has come...

@o1eh We are the only ones to blame for the destruction of our nature, how wise that madman is, they underestimate his power of knowledge, it usually happens, how lucky you are to converse with a madman, I admire his power to listen and shut up. Greetings.

I agree with you, unfortunately, as I expected, this project to create a recreational area was not approved and funds will not be allocated.
