CHILDHOOD PLACES
Childhood places where
without words and without memory
someone, perhaps me, once played
are no longer there, and neither am I.
Where? Before
what mystery
in which, like in a hesitant mirror,
my face, another face, is reflected?

They sold the house, the flowers
in the garden, if I touch them, grow stiff
and cold, and under my steps
the roses and the memories dissolve, immaterial.
The room, I could not see it,
because it was my eyes:
and I didn’t know,
and that was wisdom.

Now I know these things
in a way that does not belong to me,
as if I had stolen them.
The house no longer grows
around the living room,
they set the table for four,
but the heart only for three.

Someone is missing,
I don’t know who,
went to cut their hair and only returned
eight days later, by then
dinner had gone cold.

And once more, I am alone,
in the empty bed, in the empty room.
Outside, it’s night, the dogs bark;
and I cover my head with the sheets.
