I SPENT THE DAY LISTENING TO WHAT THE SEA SAID

Yesterday, I spent the day
Listening to what the sea had to say.
We cried, we laughed, we sang.
It spoke to me of its destiny,
Of its fate...
Then, to lift its spirit,
It rose, and dancing, and laughing,
It began to sing
A song, wet and beautiful.

Its breath carries a fragrance,
And its perfume wounds.
A desert of endless waters.
O tomb of my race,
When will you hold me?
It moved away in silence;
I drifted away, sadder,
Sicker, more weary...
In the distance, the dying sun
Tinged the waters with purple.

"Voice of the sea, mysterious;
Voice of love and truth!

O sweet, dying voice
Of my great Longing!
Bitter voice of those who stay,
Trembling voice of those who depart..."

And poets in their song
Are echoes of the sea’s voice!
