Ballads from another land, allied
With the fey longing, beloved by gnomes now gone,
Still ring lividly in the ears, drawn
From moonlit heights of winged midnight...
Along the canals, stray boats drift aside,
Whispering their lost, untrusted tides...
And, wild or wedded to the ballad’s song,
The faeries are lovely, and the stars
Belong to them... Here they drift, afar...

And the routes of these dreamed boats are mere smoke,
On the fatal, identical canals of the lost,
The boats, scarce and strayed, of the faeries—
The wintry, winged faeries, hushed,
In chants adrift, unreal, far-off, of ballads...
Sighs...
