BALLAD OF THE PASSING WIND
to António Portugal
I ask the wind that passes
for news of my land,
but the wind hides the sorrow,
the wind says nothing in hand.
I ask the rivers that carry
so many dreams on their waves,
but the rivers bring no solace,
they bear dreams and leave graves.
They bear dreams and leave sorrows,
oh rivers of my land,
my homeland adrift on the waters,
where are you bound? None understand.
If you pluck the green clovers,
ask for news, and then tell
the four-leaf clover bearer
that for my land I would dwell.
I ask the people passing
why their eyes look to the ground.
Silence—that’s all they carry,
those who in servitude are bound.
I saw green branches blooming,
upright and reaching for skies.
But those who love their masters
always have bent-down spines.
And the wind says nothing,
no one speaks of something new.
I saw my homeland crucified
on the people’s outstretched arms in view.
I saw my poem by the riverbank,
the rivers running to the sea,
like one who loves the journey
but is never truly free.
I saw ships departing
(Portugal adrift on the waters),
I saw my ballad blooming,
(green eyes, green sorrows, daughters).
There are those who wish you silenced,
and speak of homeland in your name.
I saw you crucified
on hunger’s dark arms of shame.
And the wind says nothing,
only silence lingers near.
I saw my homeland halted
by a river dark with fear.
No one speaks of something new
when I ask for news again.
In the empty hands of the people,
I saw my homeland bloom through pain.
And the night grows deep inside
the men of my land today.
I ask the wind for answers,
but the wind has nothing to say.
Yet there’s always a candle burning
in the heart of every despair,
there’s always someone sowing
songs to the passing air.
Even in the darkest night,
in times of servitude’s reign,
there’s always someone resisting,
there’s always someone saying no again.
