Google is going to delete your Timeline soon - More questions than answers
18 May 2025 is THE date.
Today I finally decided to respond to the (kinda irritating) google weekly email reminders about deleting my Timeline.
I was getting one each week in 2025, so, well, maybe I am too patient :)
It insists I open the map app on my phone and the general info is timeline data will be available only on the device after that process.
Here is the first question - what if I used google maps but I don't anymore? The answer is obvious - all my timeline data would be permanently deleted.
Here are the steps I've been asked and chose on, just in case you're facing that soon. Trying to be helpful, yeah!
I opted not to share info for "improving ads" but still I am told some data will be uploaded with regards to that.
Also, I opted to share as little as possible. Not sure my selection changes a lot, of course :)))
One thing is clear though - google is (most probably constantly) recording our exact location, no matter the maps app is used or not. (must consent to that to keep Timeline as it seems)
Wanna keep your data (meaning you want to have access to it, as I believe they will not be actually deleting it anyway) - then no more privacy! ;)
Here is another observation/question - once I completed the process, I restarted my browser on my PC and tried to access my Timeline.
I didn't see any change, despite the instructions that data will be only on my phone from now on.
Or am I not tech-savvy enough to understand the deep thinking behind this process?
To be honest, I don't quite get the real reason behind all this.
Do you?

When it comes to ANY Google project... Don't trust them. When they feel as though the project isn't "worth it" regardless of how dedicated the power users are, they just cancel the entire project.
I can appreciate the efficiency, but they do this so often that there is no point in using their projects and making it a part of your ecosystem or your habits.
The fact that YouTube is still around shows that people are still using the platform. If people werent, then bye-bye YouTube. I truly hate and appreciate Google for doing this. It's annoying at times.
True! Their angle can't be something different than profits, data collection (for more power and profits) and control :)
True, true, too, YouTube is around because they make much more bucks than the content creators. The platform won't last long if people and companies go elsewhere to advertise ;)
