I got Monopoled

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 days ago

Board games are a good way to unwind and bond over laughter and silly arguments. Most of my childhood memories are of various games played with immediate and extended family at yearly get-togethers. In every game, there's always a cheater who tries to bend the rules in his favour, a cry-baby who always feels lost in the dumps, a cunning player who is a master at strategy and an innocent player who's oblivious to all the scheming and drama. Let's not forget to add the sore-loser and over-excited winner to the list. The duo is not annoying any less. However, this diversity is what makes any game lively.

My son, who recently turned 8 (how many times has this come up?), got Monopoly as one of the presents. Unlike the Jigsaw puzzle, which only me and my husband felt responsible for, Monopoly has become a Friday night ritual for the whole family. Since it takes a good 3 to 4 hours, I have strictly limited it to once a week. Kids wait all week for Friday to pull me down. All the boys are better than me. That's unfair.

In my defence, I have never really played the game ever, probably once at a birthday party when I was 8. So, it was kind of the first time for me like my kids. The husband briefed us about the game as we played.

I quickly learned that real estate gets pricey as we move away from the starting point. The land is more profitable when you build something on it (which makes sense), and to build something, you need to own the whole land in the same area. Ok good. I can do that.

I bought land at a reasonable location and quickly built a hotel which I could rent for $1000. I could dream dollars rolling towards me, but to my dismay, not a single opponent landed at my hotel until I was close to bankruptcy and had to sell it to survive. Even then, the boys didn't take long enough to throw me out of the picture.

Snacks are a must when we sit together

In the first game, I was savagely destroyed. But that didn't make me lose my morale. I made the mistake of quickly building a hotel in the first game; I should have scattered low-paying buildings over different lands and then moved towards high-paying establishments.

So many hurdles

Keeping that in mind, I looked forward to the next Friday, passing savage remarks to my overexcited winner son all week. Luck wasn't on my side even the second time. I think they bewitched my dice; otherwise, how's it possible to get such weird combinations on every single roll — jail time, chance, community chest, parking? While I was huffing and puffing between these locations, the boys bought almost all the property and I lost all my money paying heavy rents. I was a sore loser, and my son—once again, the over-excited winner; the husband remained the cunning one in both games but remained 2nd both times. Our youngest is his dad's minion who doesn't know how to play, but more than that, he doesn't want to lose—ever.

The only property that kept me away from bankruptcy for a long time

We couldn't play this Friday as we were travelling. I will write again about the game only when I beat my savage boys.

I remember how somewhere in 88 or 89 my childhood friend went on a trip to a big and distant city and brought this wonderful game. Of course it was remade and it was called Manager. It cost 1/4 of the average salary of, for example, my dad or mom.
We would get together with friends of the same age and play this game for a long time. Over time, we grew up, the game became not so interesting. Then other versions of this game began to appear, my brother bought a similar game "Business". and only with the advent of the Internet did we find out that these were clones of the well-known Monopoly

Why would a board game be that expensive?

"Manager" and "Business" both seem to be based on similar concepts and test one's negotiation and risk-management skills.

I just got to know Monopoly (and the likes of it) is the number one most-played board game in the world. I wonder why I didn't play it in my childhood.

Why would a board game be that expensive?

I searched the Internet, wanted to clarify the price, I thought it was 25 rubles of USSR, one video author said 20 rubles. So the price was about that. The salary was about 100 rubles.
The state could not release and sell this game. Since this is capitalism - such an idea simply could not exist. The game was released by some businessmen and entrepreneurs, it was a curiosity, a rarity - that's why the price is so high. So my friend and I talked about audio cassettes. They were also sold extremely expensively, also 25 rubles. That is, you could buy your favorite music for 4 rubles on your monthly salary.

A nice way to spent some time with the family on a Friday, right before the weekend.

The game of many people's childhood, I've played it probably more than a hundred times and I don't remember winning at least once, was always too greedy with buying everything and overspending on bids, and a few times when I was doing great the game ended before someone could be called a winner...

Saw there's a PC version, you made me check it now, need to try my luck with online players now :))

Makes me feel less guilty about not spending enough (fun) time with the family during the week days.

That means I shouldn't feel bad about not winning my first two games. I also get greedy and buy everything but that's about it. I have poor negotiation skills.

Really? Share the link if it can be played online.

Came back with an update here are some online Monopoly games:

I played a couple of rounds in Business Tour Board game, pretty fun, I think you can even play it locally with friends on the same PC, everyone takes turns rolling the dice.

We have a German proverb: bad luck in gambling, good luck in love... Maybe that will comfort you ;-)))

I tried Monopoly and found nothing even slightly interesting about it. I am not and will not be a merchant, I can't do anything with the idea/principle.
