Looking for something to photograph I found this praying Mantis; I love these insects for their presence and elegance; it seems that they are always erect and ready for a gala party; but in fact that is their usual hunting posture because when they find any other insect they devour it quickly without so much ado; It is so efficient that it begins to devour it as soon as it catches it alive; it is not like other living beings that wait for their prey to die to eat it, the Praying Mantis eats it alive, so it is not religious at all; remember that this name is given simply by the position of its front legs since that gives it an appearance as if it were praying.
Sometimes they walk very fast, so it is difficult to photograph them when they are in a hurry, but they are not always so surly, since there are times when they walk in slow motion, trying to make sure that nothing around them can perceive them. It should measure between 5 to 6 centimeters which is the usual size of them in adult stage; another thing that makes them good hunters is their vision capacity and that they can turn their head 180°. They are solitary, so if we see a pair together it is because they are in the mating season and if someone is curious to know which is the female or the male they only have to know that the female is the largest. These mantises can have several colors but this one in particular has a very nice green color so we can know that the place where it inhabited in its last molt the predominant color is green which by the way can be here in my yard. Buscando algo que fotografiar me encontré con esta Mantis religiosa; estos insectos me encantan por su presencia y elegancia parece que siempre están erguidos y preparados para una fiesta de gala; pero en realidad esa es su postura habitual para cazar ya que al encontrarse con cualquier otro insecto lo devora rápidamente sin estar con tanto preámbulo; es tal su eficiencia que comienza a devorarlo apenas lo atrapa es decir vivo; no es como otros seres vivos que esperan que su presa muera para comerla la Mantis religiosa se lo come vivo así que de religiosa no tiene nada; recuerden que este nombre se le da simplemente por la posición de sus patas delanteras ya que eso le da una apariencia como si estuviese rezando.
En ocasiones camina muy rápido por lo que es difícil fotografiarla cuando anda apurada pero no todo el tiempo es tan arisca ya que hay momentos que camina como en cámara lenta tratando que nada a su alrededor pueda percibirla. Esta debe medir entre 5 a 6 centímetros que es el tamaño habitual de ellas en etapa adulta; otra cosa que las convierte en buenas cazadoras es su capacidad de visión y que pueden girar la cabeza unos 180°. Son de hábito solitario por lo que si logramos ver un par juntas es porque están en la época de apareamiento y si alguien siente curiosidad por saber cuál es la hembra o el macho solo tienen que saber que la hembra es la más grande. Estas mantis pueden tener varios colores pero está en particular tienen un color verde muy bonito por lo que podemos saber que el sitio donde habitaba en su última muda el color predominante es el verde que por cierto puede ser aquí en mi patio. Estos insectos no representan peligro para las personas pero si detallas su actitud cuando le molestas es bastante intolerante.
