Today: 8 Years on Steemit!

Today, January 29th, marks the 8th anniversary of the day I made my Steemit account!

There's something slightly extraordinary associated with even writing that, in that I have almost never stayed with a single online project for this long!

I guess that is not only testament to Steemit’s longevity, but also to its ability to keep me interested in being here.

And for that, I am grateful!

I found this community almost completely by accident. I didn't see an ad anywhere nor did I follow some link promoting this venue. Instead, I found it because a friend of mine on Facebook sent me a message to go and check out an article about Universal Basic Income, and that article just happened to have been written on Steemit.

At the time, Donald Trump had just been elected president of the USA for the first time, and I was rather fed up with Facebook and other social media because the tone and atmosphere was very combative and people — even long-time friends — were being ridiculously rude to each other.

Upon landing at Steemit I noticed that the dialogues in the comments section of the article I was reading — and subsequently other articles I read —were a lot more intelligent and respectful than I had seen anywhere else in many many years.

Consequently, having looked around for a bit, I decided that I would make an account here and perhaps start blogging. In the beginning, I mostly just wanted to interact, more than write.

When I started out, I honestly didn't really care anything about the reward system nor did I have any particular belief in the possibility that anybody would actually get paid rewards. After all, I had belonged to other sites that "paid" their contributors for creating content, but it always had limitations such as "you don't get paid till you've accumulated at least $100" or some other restrictions. Restrictions, I might add, that usually were designed to avoid paying people at all.

Since then, I have written 2,150 posts on a huge variety of topics. As this primarily serves as my personal blog much of what I write amounts to anecdotes and observations about the human condition... I write what I write because it's also what I prefer to read.

This community is an ever-changing landscape, in which I have seen people come and go... and sometimes come back. And I am grateful for the friends I have made along the way!

I am alsograteful for the fact that Steemit has saved my financial ass a few times.

It has never been my intention to cash out my stake, but the few times I have done so I was to keep my truck in legal working order (new tires), and to pay tax bills that allowed me to stay in my house, rather than losing it in tax foreclosure.

And I can only describe that as a positive, even if certain elements of the community frowns on it.

Regardless, I hope to continue blogging here, for many years to come!
