Commentary: Arguments Start When Someone Just HAS to be Right!

in WORLD OF XPILAR4 years ago

I have almost always been "The Peacekeeper" in groups I have been part of... I've written about that part of my personality before, so I won't get into it again.

However, it seems to almost always hold true that arguments start because someone in the group feels like they have to be right. It's not necessarily about reaching a right outcome in an overall sense... it's about a person who feels like the most important thing is "being right."

This can quickly escalate and become problematic when you encounter a personality type who just won't let go of an idea, even though it's not important to anyone else in the group.

I encountered plenty of such personalities during my brief stint in corporate America... and they tended to make life pretty unpleasant for everyone else! Of course, the problem became that they would want to force their idea through, even when it wasn't a particularly good solution.

Sadly, some such people seemed to rise to leadership positions, simply because their forcefulness gave the appearance that they were good managers. Alas, they weren't.

It was actually as a result of one such person that I ultimately ended up leaving the mainstream workforce and becoming self-employed instead. I simply got tired of "forcefulness" getting more attention and acceptance than coming up with the optimal solutions to the problems we were trying to solve.

It's a decision I have seldom — if ever — regretted. Perhaps the only thing I ever missed about having a "real" job was the fact that the money was a lot better than what I've ever been able to make from working for myself. But it's difficult to put a monetary value on not having to deal with these "mini dictators!"

I'm not entirely sure what lies behind a person who feels like everything is a debate that must be won, although it seems like the psychology of insecurity may be to blame, to a large degree. The less secure certain people feel, the more secure they try to convey to the world that they are... often with pretty unhappy results!

I much prefer my peaceful workplace at home!

Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your week!
