An evening on the Fontanka River embankment

The Fontanka's banks are clad in granite from where it separates from the Neva River, almost to the mouth. Only a small stretch downstream remains free from the granite shackles. Here you will not see any buses with tourists, only locals walk along the quay. In summer the slopes to the water are occupied by fishermen, but in winter and early spring it's not crowded. If it weren't for the cars whizzing by on the fresh, smooth tarmac, you'd imagine you were transported back in time to a previous century. Waves lapping, seagulls screeching, and somewhere out there, beyond the bridge and harbour cranes, the sun is setting in the waters of the Gulf of Finland.

Берега Фонтанки одеты в гранит начиная от того места, где она отделяется от Невы, и почти до самого устья. Только небольшой участок в нижнем течении остаётся свободным от гранитных оков. Здесь вы не встретите автобусы с туристами, по набережной гуляют только местные жители. Летом спуски к воде занимают рыбаки, но зимой и ранней весной здесь малолюдно. Если бы не автомобили, проносящиеся по свежему ровному асфальту, можно было бы себе представить, что вы перенеслись в предыдущее столетие. Плещутся волны, кричат чайки и где-то там, дальше, за мостом и портовыми кранами, солнце садится в воды Финского залива.
