Visiting The Historic Town of Ludlow in England
🏫

Hello Steemians. This post is about our visit to Ludlow last week, an historic market town located in the county of Shropshire. Ludlow has nearly 500 listed buildings, including examples of medieval and Tudor-style half-timbered buildings. The town was described by Sir John Betjeman as "probably the loveliest town in England".

Ludlow's history can be traced back to Roman times when it served as a fortified settlement called “Ludanum.” During the Anglo-Saxon period, Ludlow became an important trading center, and by the Norman Conquest, it had grown into a significant market town.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Ludlow continued to grow and prosper, becoming a centre for wool trade and attracting wealthy merchants. In the 12th century, Ludlow castle was built. During the English Civil War, Ludlow was besieged multiple times due to its strategic location.

In front of the castle is the impressive Castle Lodge, a medieval Tudor and Elizabethan house. It has one of the largest collections of oak panelling in England and dates from the early 13th century and rebuilt in 1580.

At the moment is not open to the public as it is going through refurbishment but I remember when I visited in Dec 2013, I was very impressed with all the wood, with creaking, wooden floors and floorboards!
