Cham des Bondons, Megalithic Europe - 154 menhirs (prehistoric standing stones) on Mont Lozère, South France Landscape Photography
Cham des Bondons has the second largest concentration of menhirs (standing stones) in France, dating to between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, over 4000 years ago. It is considered one of the oldest monuments in France and one of the largest sites of megalithic Europe.
A menhir consists of a single vertical stone, its purpose remains enigmatic.
Various theories exist to explain the function of these monoliths, from territorial landmarks or astronomical reasons to serving part in an ideological system.
This concentration of 154 menhirs erected on an area of less than 10 km2 on Mont Lozère inspired some to theorize a function for tribal reasons or a sacred site. Monoliths in this area were cut from granite but transported and erected in a limestone plateau.
