Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Prov.3:5-6)

Hi, dear reader.

I am sure we all know that 'comfort character' thing. And many of us may have experienced the feeling of reading the very end of a good, meaningful story.

In modern social media, there's a trend about 'comfort characters', especially about not being able to let go of them. There are, in addition, many fanfics, the authors of which try to write a sequel or change the plot to satisfy fans' expectations.

I don't know if you've ever felt that story should've gone the other way, but I have. Somehow it seems impossible the protagonist chose another thing to say, another (than I expected) person to love, or just another way to live their life.

However, their own decision wasn't harmful or morally explicit. It's just not what I wanted them to do.

But recently I have finished a book with a surprising ending without feeling this. Probably for the first time in my life!

All of a sudden I understood that although it's only fictional characters, they still have a choice to be themselves. And I have no despotic power to urge them to be someone else. Moreover, I don't have to.

In my opinion, this kind of feeling can be moved to reality. We begin to expect our close ones to live the way we want them to, or to simply try taking control over every single event in our own lives. Even when we are certain, there is nothing to control.

Sometimes it takes a lot of time and effort to let it go. As an Orthodox Christian, I can say that we are responsible for our choices and decisions. But there is a lot one should leave to God.

I sometimes felt responsible for others' salvation and wellness. But this is not me. This is God. Of course, helping as many people as possible is very significant. But no one can be changed if they are not willing to change.

And not everyone needs a change. That is it.

Thank you, dear friends!

May I ask which book you were reading? I'm also into fiction and often feel the same about the events in a story and then relate those to real life.

P.S. I noticed that you are not using your voting power. Steem community thrives on give and take principle. It would be great if you vote and interact with others for it will be beneficial for your blog.

Thank you very much for an advice!

I was reading 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak.

Ah... I have watched the movie and been thinking to read the book for so long.

I heard about it a lot, but decided to start reading only when my family member gave it to me as a present
