Some Cool Macro Shots of a Crane Fly
I Just Had To Share ..
While out at a clients home an afternoon Not too long ago and I happened to observe a Crane Fly resting on the siding. We see these insects all of the time here in Southern New Jersey, and especially in or near wooded areas. That is just where I found this guy (or girl), at the edge of the wooded tree line. The are a rather large fly that is quite harmless. The adult fly has pretty much one goal in mind.. umm.. ummm.. This is not the point in time where I will be talking about the "Bird's and the Bee's". I'll be quick about it. They simply want to mate and leg eggs. That's all! Simple right? The larval form can even be considered beneficial, since they help decompose organic matter in that part of their life cycle.
Now, Biology Aside ..
This guy was in the perfect position for the photo shoot. Since they do not spook easily, I was able to get some really good macro shots. The flies wings were spread and all six legs stretched out, bracing the massive body against the homes vinyl siding. I moved in for the shot and rattled off about 10 to 15 of them from different angles. I captured them all in color then edited them to black and white afterwards. I have to say, the black and white edits came out really nice.
This first one is my favorite. The fly is back-lit by the sun, creating a perfect silhouette and nifty little shadow. The lines of the siding add a good bit of interest too. The depth of field is pretty narrow giving it even more interest, in my opinion. The photo is actually turned 90 degrees from it's original position, but I liked that position the best.
Here are a few other variations of the same shot. It's so hard to tell here, but the insects wings are actually spread apart. They are so exactly lined up, that they appear closed.
I sort of like this one too. Looking at him/her eye to eye! It's sort of sitting there a bit crooked, but I am liking the wings. The venation in the wings is AWESOME!! They remind me of stained glass.
So here I wanted to give you a little perspective of size.
I suppose I got a little to close, because after I took the picture, the fly flew away. I saw it land not too far away, in the corner of two walls.
I had to take one or two more pictures, because now the wings were closed. Not as cool in my opinion, so I decided to leave the Crane Fly alone and be on my way!
Thank you for swinging by my blog and checking out the post. Have a great day!

About Me ~ The Artist
My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.
Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.
For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.
