The Locks of Love - A Visual Story Part 1 (12 Photos)
Guess there are quite many cities in the world with this interesting tradition, when couple gets married they put a lock (normally with their names and date) most often on a bridges handrails. Maybe bridge mostly used for the fact that of course it maybe quite convenient to fix a lock, either this combined with other tradition when the groom has to pass the bride via the bridge holding her on hands.
When such tradition appeared here in Klaipeda, after certain period of time that was officially forbidden to hang locks on main city bridge, due it is a historical heritage and rusting locks were bringing certain damage to it's surface. As an alternative, city authorities fixed a special rounded sculpture nearby the bridge, which is full of locks by now
But our story is still different. Some couples after the ceremony prefer to go to the coast of Baltic Sea and to the Gates to the Port in particular (probably due very easy access by cars and good parking abilities there). And finally some of them decided to fix their locks on a handrails there, or even climbing over the handrails to the live of concrete wave breakers
Couple of weeks ago having nice evening walk there and very long tele-photo lens with me, I got a chance to make few shots of those locks nicely climbing out there. Unusual and interestingly looking geometrical lines and some already really rusty locks.
Even too many shots, so second part to come sometimes later
Enjoy!

Hmmm! Some of those locks are as old as their grotesque looks; all to foister a non existence eternal bond between couples!! What a complicit SUPERSTITION????
Has any authourity trived to
substantiate the veracity of this tradition via statistical analysis of the divorce rate of affected couples??
I don't really think the fact that you hanged on a lock during your wedding somehow will affect future divorce if such happens...
Wow very interesting story which are quite still happening in some region, but here in Africa there tradition are really forbidden they are not been practice anymore.
Thanks though for reminding us of such history!
When we were in Cambodia this January the guide was telling as about wedding traditions there. And warned in no case to come there, you will be drunk till death.. quick. It counts if white man comes there is kind of bless and all guests have to drink with you, one by one...
Dude why are you locking stone ...
Amazing shots.
Not to be stolen of course!!! :D
I was thinking there will be a story. Because it includes a title of "visual story" So I don't understand the actual idea. Sorry.
To say in simple words: visual story - photo story
