Due ricercatrici hanno messo a punto un metodo per ricavare il litio dalle batterie usate utilizzando le microonde: è rapido, efficace e più ecologico dei metodi tradizionali.
Il litio è utilizzato nella produzione di tutti i tipi di batterie il cui recupero è complesso e costoso in termini energetici ed ecologici.
Il mercato degli accumulatori agli ioni di litio (LIB, lithium-ion battery) nel 2023 è stato valutato quasi 65 miliardi di dollari e si stima che nei prossimi otto anni crescerà oltre il 23%.
I metodi tradizionali di riciclo del litio riescono a recuperare meno del 5% del litio.
Questo nuovo metodo è molto più rapido: per filtrare l'87% del litio dalla batteria esausta impiega appena 15 minuti, contro le 12 ore necessarie normalmente.
Il nuovo processo non è solo più efficiente in termini di quantità di litio recuperate, ma anche meno rischioso per l'ambiente.
