THE FIRST SONNET OF THE WANDERING PORTUGUESE
I am the solitary, the estranged one,
the one who has a homeland that once was
and that is no more. I am the exiled one
from a country that does not exist and yet pains me.

I am absent even when present,
the sedentary one who embarked on a journey.
I am the nonconformist, the unyielding,
the one who, staying, remains in transit.

I am the one who belongs to a single place,
lost like the Greek in another Iliad.
I am this departure, this staying.

And the ship that carried me will not return.
I am perhaps the last Lusitanian,
seeking a harbor that is not there.
