SO THAT LITERATURE CAN STILL BE SAVED
I like the characters who die
before the end of the stories. That's life.
Those who survive are condemned
to a purgatory from which
no fiction will rescue them.
Characters should be like medicines:
they should have an expiration date.
I don't like when people ask:
what happened to Bernardo
and Luísa after that drama?
There are questions that literature cannot
and should not leave unanswered. It's fatal.
Today, writing is already done for the second edition,
for the label that proclaims success,
for the interview in the weekly magazine,
for the empire of banality.
The frenzy for the new drives the market
to call some passersby writers
who accidentally decided
to make literature a steady income,
a spiral staircase to the glory
of dentist's offices.
In these particular cases, the characters
should exterminate the authors. Why?
So that literature can still be saved.
