India's 27-year-long reign ended with a series loss to Sri Lanka. In the third and final ODI of the series, Sri Lanka secured the series win by defeating India by 2-0.
Sri Lanka won the toss and went into bat in this match held at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Two openers Pathum Nisanka and Avishka Fernando started with careful batting. As a result of their careful batting, Sri Lanka collected 41 runs without losing a wicket in the power play. Later, Avishka Fernando and Kushal Mendis' fluent batting increased the score. Avishka Fernando came close to a century but was unfortunately dismissed for just 96 runs.
On the other hand, Kushal Mendis played a fighting innings of 59 runs. However, the rest of the team's batsmen failed to do anything significant, as a result of which Sri Lanka collected 248 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.
India did not get off to a good start as they were put into bat for a target of 249 runs. Rohit Sharma tried to put up some resistance but the team's other batsmen could not help much. Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli failed to score the expected runs.
Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Dunith Wallalage single-handedly destroyed India's batting lineup. With his 5 wickets and Vanders' 2 wickets, India were bundled out for 134 runs. As a result, India lost to Sri Lanka by a big margin of 110 runs.
With this victory, Sri Lanka won the bilateral series against India after a long 27 years.
