I often hear the comment, "Isn't alcohol expensive in Helsinki?"

Well, yes it is more expensive than Spain and many other European countries. However, there is a way to cut the cost by buying smart.

Buying smart in Helsinki Finland

There are a few smart ways of buying your favourite tipple in Helsinki that you may not have thought about.

  1. Avoid using bars or restaurants in the tourist areas in the centre of Helsinki. Just a short tram or metro trip to Hakaniemi you will find many great traditional bar's selling Beer and wine at almost 50% cheaper than in the centre. For example, a bottle of red wine in a Hakaniemi bar can be as cheap as 18€ compared with 45-60€ in the centre.
  2. Keep a eye open for a deal. Often you will find some great deals even just off the centre. They are normally pub's that have a regular customer base. I have seen a bottle of red wine for as little as 25€.
  3. Drink a few glasses of wine before going out. You can buy a bottle of cheap red wine from Alko for about 8€.
  4. Avoid buying a drink with your meal, there prices are far more expensive than pub's. Save your money and wait until you go to the pub after your meal.
  5. Buy a 6 pack from the local shop and sit on the waterfront or park and drink with friends. A 6 pack of Beer is about 10-15€ depending the beer.
  6. Avoid drinking spirits or spirits with mixers. A local spirit can cost between 6-20€ or something's even more. So adding a mixer will add another 3-6€ to the price.
  7. Avoid drinking international drinks apart from wine.

Alcohol still seems expensive

I am sorry to say that alcohol is expensive in Helsinki and if we consider the global prices Finland is higher than most countries outside of Scandinavia.

But hopefully this article has helped you see that you can cut the cost. Also if you are a tourist getting out of the tourist areas is a great way to connect with another type of Finland.
