an extraordinary place in berlin

only those who leave their home port can learn and see new stuff and get to know unusual places. this is what happened to KÄPT'N KALLE during one of his stays in berlin. in the meantime, a visit to the sticker museum is part of the obligatory program when KÄPT'N KALLE comes to berlin. here in the atlas obscura the extraordinary museum has also found a place and for the sticker scene the collection has become an indispensable institution. if you travel to berlin, you should definitely leave the boring well-trodden tourist paths (like all the well known museums) and go to the district of friedrichshain, for a unique experience. there you will find the world's first sticker museum. the exact address in 10247 berlin is schreinerstrasse 10.
hardly anyone will regret visiting this museum, on the contrary, it will remain in positive memory for a long time. since 1983 is OLIVER BAUDACH collecting stickers. he cames from the palatinate in the south of germany. he is a sympathetic sticker enthusiast with a genial disposition. he opened the museum in berlin in 2008 and now owns a collection of well over 30,000 sticky exhibits from all over the world. these are not just stickers of soccer players that a manufacturer of unhealthy sweets adds to their products for better sales or kitschy glitter stickers for children. the artwork shown here comes mainly from the sector of skateboard, street wear, graffiti and street art and accordingly shows excerpts from advertising, commercial, street art and culture. all these areas are connected to each other, overlap and can't always be separated clearly. the incredibly exciting creativity, is the constant commonality that connects the areas with each other. fascinating and exciting is the way in which the small stickers can be designed in so many different ways. there is also a connection to the graffiti scene, in which stickers are a popular medium for spreading one's name. this connection is also revealed, for example, by MARTHA COOPER's visit. she was the first who document new yorks graffiti by camera to systematically. she started to photograph graffiti in the 1970s and is therefore a legend and part of the writer scene. in 1984 she published her book subway art.
in addition to such top-class guests, world-famous artists such as SHEPARD FAIREY (obey), who designed the obama poster with the lettering "hope", are represented with their art in the museum. here you can also find stickers from numerous artists who are active and resident in berlin, such as ABOVE, EL BOCHO, MEIN LIEBER PROST, TOWER, SEÑOR SCHNU or OSTFUG and many more.
when visiting the museum you should definitely take some time to take a queit look to all the stickers. even if you´ve much time you would not be able to see everything and allways find something new. the museum is open from thursday to saturday from 12 to 16 o'clock. entry is free of charge. but OLI would certainly appreciate a donation. because he has no access to state funds that are allocated for financial support of the culture, he has to finance the project by himself and as everybody knows, renting in berlin is getting more and more expensive and it is getting harder and harder for him. besides the permanent exhibition in schreinerstraße, the hatch kingdom has exhibitions all over the world. parts of the collection have been presented in moscow, washington or new york and the museum has also cooperated with scientists from universities.
here is a tip for the collectors of these small works of art. on the website of the sticker museum there is also the possibility to buy a lot of stickers. so you can support the project and at the same time build up your own collection. for all collectors of stickers a hot tip and probably the most comprehensive shop.
for artists who create stickers and spread it in public space themselves, the following information: you can become part of the museum and be included in the collection. all you have to do is send a letter with the small works of art to OLIVER BAUDACH (address see above).
