Real-World Use Cases of Web3 in Supply Chain and Logistics
Blockchain will disrupt supply chains and logistics and bring a new level of visibility, traceability and operational efficiency. This beats fraud, inefficiencies and lack of accountability in traditional supply chains.
It’s about authentication of things through product tracing. Through this customers can verify and authenticate the source of their products. Then a buyer can confirm product compliance in the supply chain through the Transparency platform utility, so the producer can confirm the authenticity of raw materials acquisition to secondary sales before creating a new product. All this happens fast when a product is serialized.
With blockchain all transactions can be recorded in a non-editable ledger from raw material procurement to final product delivery in the supply chain. It’s already happening with companies like IBM and Maersk who have rolled out the blockchain platform TradeLens that provides end-to-end global shipping visibility as it happens. This will eliminate counterfeits and customers will increasingly trust the food and pharma industries.
Another application modifier is smart contracts. Smart contracts can automate processes, for example, that require notification on arrival for payments or compliance checks on receipt of goods. Smart contracts can make a rule for the payment to be credited to the supplier’s wallet once the shipment reaches its destination, reducing many problems that often delay payment due to manual errors in the process of making the payment.
A decentralized logistics platform is possible through web3. Participants can provide or share unused storage or transportation capacity with tokenized incentives, and this will pave the way for credible and efficient supply chains. Companies like VeChain and OriginTrail are implementing decentralized solutions to enhance integrity and efficiency in supply chains.
All these new web3 technologies have made supply chains and logistics a revolution. So now we have a more efficient global trade ecosystem that’s more responsible and accountable.
